Human Skin WIPs and Tips (Everyone feel free to post your own skin WIPS here too)

I’ve been working on this guy for a while now. The model was originally made for spectacular challenge.
It’s based on ‘real’ sss (mr fast skin) instead of ramps or other tricks, unlike my previous skin shaders on this thread. There is little error in displacement in the neck area. Specular maps need some work aswell. Other than those two I’m pretty happy with the result.

Heres a couple of skins I did back in Lightwave using procedurals only - no SSS or such - just going for a good base look (though I was never really satisfied with my results). I use XSI now though so - meh…

Just slight variations of each other.
Warning: The images are a bit ‘cheeky’ - so discretion needed…

teemu,I really like the bump map(or the displacement?),it looks vwry fleshy, you made a good work on it.

But there is almost no sss,you have to work more on it,and on the colour map too.Keep it up!

#1364

Thanks. Yeah, sss is almost invisible. My brother said that too but I guess I didn’t listen:rolleyes:
I’ve been testing different setting today. It’s difficult to find good balance. Sometimes one part looks perfect while other one is too waxy.
Has anyone tried making a map for scattering radius? I made a test with checker map. I just couldn’t figure out how you set values for black and white. For example if you want 50% grey to be 2 cm scattering radius. I’ve also been thinking putting skull mesh inside the head and using real sss. Thats bit too extreme. It would take too much time to make and render.

#1365

Ok. I made another test with radius maps. I had to find decent values by guessing and testing. Forehead has less scattering and lips/mouth area more.

I have been working on a vray skintexture, view it the thead here…

havnt posted here in a while…
…so here goes.
this old guy i modelled the base mesh in maya, then did all the detail and textures in ZBrush, but rendered it in maya using MiSSS…the spec map still needs work, and i’ll probably do a bump to get rid of the slight plasticy look there is here, but i hope you like…CandC welcome

heres an attempt with vray sss… not perfect, but not too bad either.

okay guys, heres my current sss shader (very, very wip):
http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/2585/shader2copy6kn.jpg

this isnt exactly the shader from the image i posted earlier, and i havent got around to making a vertexpaint mask for the reflections yet (as i had in the posted image), but its working okay…

the main problem with my shader is that it rquires some colorcorrection in photoshop afterwards. im working to fix this…

anyway, my skin stuff is covered in more detail in this thread:

-and thanks for the compliments sijen

This is my first post at CGtalk.

Here is my XSI procedural skin that I am currently working on at Vancouver Film School. This is going to be for an animation project, so sss is not an option. I’m pretty happy with it, considering how little time I have. It is using a translucency fake technique based off of Steven Stahlberg’s shader for Maya. I am still working out some of the details in XSI. I am using a incidence shader to achieve the peach fuzz/rim light effect, the very thin white silouette, around the edges of the skin. The down side of the incidence shader is that it appears in unwanted areas, like under the chin. Does anyone know how to get the peach fuzz effect in XSI 5.0?
