Human Mars Mission - spacecraft

#1

I started working on another project. This is a spacecraft that is based on current technology. It’s what I imagine a spacecraft for first human Mars mission would look like.

The spacecraft is composed of 6 modules, each 8m across and 12m length. Each contains different spacecraft system and each module would be launched on Space Launch System rocket, or SLS. It’s currently under the development by NASA. If I remember correctly, it will be capable of launching around 130 tons into LEO (Low Earth Orbit).

General module plan:

Module 1 - greenhouse
Module 2 - Laboratories
Module 3 - Spaceship control systems - GNC, trajectory, communications, environmental control system…
Module 4 - Airlock, docking port, robotic arm
Module 5 - Crew quarters, living room, kitchen, gym
Module 6 - Storage space, 3d printer

Every module is connected to nearest module by a corridor. Those 3 yellowish spheres are supercritical helium tanks. It’s used to pressurize fuel in fuel tanks.

Here is my latest WIP render, modeled in blender and rendered with Cycles

#2

Exterior:

Added external panels, added placeholder for heat radiators, finished one solar panel and supporting structure, working out where to put helium containers.

Interior

#3

Some details on the exterior truss structure

#4

The choice of color for the interior is weird for em. Look like a Hospital corridor. Too much blue and beige. The ISS interior have less blue panels but more whiteish panels.

#5

Yes, you are right! Thanks for noticing that. But the interior is in no way finished. I have to put some instruments in there, some screens, windows… I only stopped working on the interiors because I want to finish exterior and then model something for the Spaceship challenge.

#6

Heat radiators

#7

Adding details and started adding textures

#8

After some consideration I changed the solar panels. I think this is better

#9

This is my final render. I tried playing with compositing in Blender. I added some chromatic aberration, stars background and some lens flare. I am asking an advice on how to make it better. I think I don’t have a bad model. The texturing is of medium quality, but I’ve seen worse models that look better due to scene composition.

I hope I didn’t go full JJ Abrams on lens flares
Your honest opinions please.
