Human figure posing app

#1

I’ve just come into possession of a second hand ipad which I’m using to help with my illustration work. I was looking at Youtube tutorials, and found one by a girl who was demonstrating various apps, and she showed a free 3D figure posing app that looked pretty cool, but she moved along before revealing exactly what it was called.

I was wondering, can anyone suggest some decent free or low cost figure posing apps for the ipad? The focus wouldn’t need to be on custon beuilding my own 3D characters to draw from, off-the-shelf pre-made human figures would be fine, just so long as I can pose & rotate them.

Thanks.

One of the classes at CGMA had a great site I believe mentioned but im not sure which it is let me check

I would push you to research LIFE drawing apps over figure drawing apps that focus on real models with lighting. It really depends on what your goal is. The nice thing about the ipad is it enables you to use all the digital tools to get out and go sketch real people. If you are starting out this can be about as intimidating as it gets. I think many find that you figure out some of the tips an instructor will give you for free when you are faced with having to quickly jot downs lines and details of moving subjects. That may be someone sitting at a bar or table or on a swing. Getting out means you will always be targeting diffrent subjects in different ways and will show a lot of life in your work. It helps to have a class for sure even if its just for the feedback on your work to let you know where you are at.

if you are just looking for quick reference or motivation digital posing apps can definitely help but the advantages are far different and the risk of picking up lifeless or bad anatomical habits increase. My advice is go be bad for 4 or 5 months and post weekly works in a sketchbook thread here on the site. The goal isn’t to be good its to get better and absorb all those skills along the way

There’s a tool available on App store called “Pose Tool 3D”. I believe that’s the type of app you’re looking for.

Cool, I’ll look into that - thanks!

I’ve been illustrating in one way or another for 30 years, but due to a crippling anxiety that’s getting steadily worse, I find myself unable to get the pictures out of my head. It’s like a block that I can’t get through.

More than likely, I’m going to have to find an illustrator to develop the stories I want to share, but I need help even storyboarding them. When it comes to drawing these days, I can’t make the brain communicate with the hand, so if i can get basic poses via a 3d human figure app, I’ll use that and draw over any details I need.

The more I think about this, the more I’m thinking it might need to be a paid app, as I have further questions about what can be done with these packages.

For example, does anyone know if there’s a 3d app that deals with figures and can build basic rooms too? I mean without getting into the complex mechanics of 3d software, where you can add walls, doors, windows, basic blocks of furniture, and then place a basic 3d figure within?

I’m not going to waste too much time agonising about not illustrating a story myself. It might take 6 months to finish a single panel. I’d be happy as the writer providing I can put together a storyboard with basic directions…

Thanks.

I’ve taken FREE out of the title.

The simplest way of explaining what I really need - and it doesn’t actually have to be designed as storyboarding software - is like a 3D version of what Steve Carell was doing in MARWOOD, but on a greatly simplified level.

Where I can set up four walls, blocks for furniture, plain doors & windows, and add very simple preset male and female figures, never more than two in any scene, most often a single figure. So long as they can be easily positioned and are correctly proportioned, they can almost be featureless, or just have the very basics. Unclothed is ideal. I can add details like that when I draw over each shot.

I’d then move the viewpoint to where I need it and take a shot, then position the next shot.
