Adobe’s Photoshop has become an essential tool in the arsenal professional artists.
The new CS3 release of the program has tools that allow for the editing and importing some 3D graphics file formats. Since this a new area for most 2D users, I seems a ripe opportunity for Lightwave.
So should lightwave integrate better with Photoshop?
Should we use the HUB as a way to send items to layers in Photoshop?
Should we have a way to launch Photoshop IN lightwave?
Well, I don’t have CS3, but I recently did a model for a friend in LW and since he was doing the texture work in CS3, I had to find a way to get it to him in a workable format. Unfortunately as far as I know the plugin for LW models in CS3 is not available yet, so I had to convert to triangles and export it as a 3Ds file, which he was able to work with. I’m not sure having a link in LW itself is necessary, since I can have LW open and PS open at the same time and switch between the two with my multi monitor setup. I think even with a single monitor it would be workable, so not sure if extra code for the hub would be necessary. Just my take on it from recent experience.
Lightwave and Newtek have already showcased a future plugin for Photoshop, called rendition which is heading for better integration between the applications. http://www.newtek.com/rendition/
So should lightwave integrate better with Photoshop?
Well integration is a two way streak and Adobe needs to play better with many formats, just as much as LW does. Rendition will offer .LWO support, similar to CS3’s included .OBJ support (which LW also supports)
Should we use the HUB as a way to send items to layers in Photoshop?
Possibly, i do believe the HUB from LW is well before it’s time, what do i envision?
We already have interchangable cross platform/product formats such as .FBX, .DAE, .PSC
I would like to see this trend continue, for example programs like XSI can load point oven, .MDD and even .LWO and .LWS scenes natively, what we want is for this to happen interactively in realtime…
Enter the HUB or Bridge, that combines all 3D/2D software with formats like collada or point oven that allows me to edit scenes in Lightwave, and simply by Alt-Clicking to XSI or Photoshop or Mudbox etc, the scenes and data are sent automatically across the HUB to the desired application, it updates resaves and send the data back through the HUB, Bridge transparently to the user. An even better way would be Opensource version, which would then see all developers make there own plugin to join it, rather one developer make a bunch of host plugins themselves. /DREAM END
The ability to send my scene straight to Blender, and export the fluid sim, back out to LW just by Alt-Tabbing, back into PSCS3 for some paint /texture update is where we will one day be, however the technology already exists today to achieve this.
Should we have a way to launch Photoshop IN lightwave?
This could be done via Lscript or C plugins already as it is. And there are plugins for LW which will intercept updates in Photoshop and automatically reload the updated edited texture, automatically.
would be nice to not have to create UVs and paint right on the object
using PS tools and layers.
Or just do an atlas map but LW hub gives PS info on where the individual polys are in 3d space but allows you to paint as if you where in the perspective view.
PS would have to have an openGL or somthn or bridge to lightwave
and only paint on the polys that are currently selected in lightwave like a mask in PS
the map would look crazy but you could apply overlay effects.
First am all better 3d object handling mast come from Adobe. Their GL implementation is worse then old lW legacy OGL. Rotating objects is slow and sluggish.
Last time I’m tried to make texture for the OBJ object exported from LW with UVs i get an error: “Not enough memory”. It’s was a head model with around 3000 polygons and i tried to make 4096x4096 texture for it. Photoshop stucked on creation of the blank image. I’m running CS3 on XP x64 with 4Gig RAM on Quad Mac Pro 2.66. It’s ridiculous there is no such problem for the Ps with regular images, i.e. i can create an image 4096x4096 and work with dozens of layers with ease but i can’t create same resolution image map for the texture of the 3D object loaded in Ps :banghead:
