chances are its a variety of processes mixed together. if I was going to be doing this shot, i would probably work out the general shape with a particle system(s), render a few passes for depth and different density levels, and then bring in to a compositng application. once in 2d land, a lot of glows, streaks, color correction, and warping would be in order.
of course, thats only one way. im sure that there are 10 other people with 10 other methods out there.
Some time you got to get over the step “let-the-program-do-it-for-you” and “press-here-to-make-cool-effect-button”…
Well ive seen it used in about 10 movies now and i know its not something that is made by using a bunch of different things. Im not a amatuer im just a person trying to see if theres another program out there i should use.

Frankly I don’t know how they did this one…
however…
I’ve seen very simluar effects done first by creating a transparent object model… (in this case the spherical shape of the force field… then using displacement maps that ripple through the object… probably several layers of ripples… (some big ones running one way and some small ones running another way… etc…) then map some real movie footage of running water and flames on to the object…
finaly you will render this out in passes so that everything can be adjusted in your compositing software so that it looks even clearer that it ever could just rendering it out from a 3D program…
Anyway… That’s how I saw it done last time I saw it done…
most people working on movies are TALENTED artist. There is no button pusing cool effect going on. that is why they get paid what they do. That is prob a combination of 3D and photoshop and a composition program.
