How to use Reference Models?

#1

I’m looking in the help guide and I don’t understand how to use reference models. Can you have a main scene with all the reference models in-bedded, and then edit the individual model without closing the main scene? It’s a pain to switch to the model file, change it, and then re-open the main scene again.

What I’m trying to do is build a game level to export to Torque 3D. I want all the assets in the main scene, positioned correctly, BUT if I want to make changes to a particular model I don’t want to have to close the main scene.

Thanks!

Modify > Model > Make Referenced Model Local

Make your changes.

Modify > Model > Convert to Reference

Could you give me a bit more of an explanation please?

You said that you wanted all your reference models in the main scene but you didn’t wnat to close the main scene to modify one of them.

So you import all your reference models into the main scene.

When you want to modify one of them, you convert it to non-referenced using Model > Modify > Model > Make Reference Model Local.

Then you modify it however you want.

When you’re done, you convert it back to a referenced model using Model > Modify > Model > Convert to Reference. You can overwrite the original .emdl file, or save as a different version.
