How to orbit around objs w/out a MMB?

#1

I have obviously googled this at least 3 times and I still can’t find it even in the Hotkeys Reference List PDF docs! Plus the fact that I don’t have a middle mouse button doesn’t really help as just about all data I’ve found out there assumes you do have one. Blender has a button to emulate it in the User Prefs/Input tab, but although I was able to use it before, now it doesn’t seem to make a difference, regardless of the OS (Win7 or Linux/Ubuntu) I’m using.

If I use Alt + LMB it Pans. If I use Shift + Alt + LMB then the whole application window pans (in Ubuntu). Ctrl + Alt + LMB Zooms. I just can’t believe that I’m having such a hard time finding what should be one of the easiest hotkeys to find! This is what happens when you get used to using a 3D mouse

Thanks guys,

Use numeric keyboard.

Thank you for the suggestion dac77
I have tried that, but although it works, IMHO is not nearly as good as with the hotkey. Mostly because it’s incremental.

Yes! Finally! I remapped the keys in the User Prefs/3D View/3D View (Global)/RotateView to Cntrl Left Mouse.
Thanks to FreeMind from the BlenderArtists Forum for suggesting it.

The default key should be Alt+LMB.

#6

in ubuntu you can change the alt button if you go to
system>preferences>windows

there you can change alt by super (win logo)

I see, so that was the culprit eh?!
Thank you so much belich
I have changed that already.
