How to morph a sphere into a plane

Hi, I’m trying to morph a sphere into a plane. I have a globe that I need to morph into a flat world map, but I can’t pick the plane as a target because it doesen’t have the same number of vertices. Any ideas will be much appreciated and if someone could point me to a tutorial or a .max file about this pls.
