How to model blocked hair in Maya?

#1

Hi there, i’m a student learning 3d modelling and needed some help. I’m currently following a model sculpted from zbrush and looking to model it in Maya. Yes, i’m trying to model it from the ground up and not bringing in the whole model from zbrush. I’m wondering how does one model a blocked hair in Maya? I’ve seen tutorials online on hair made from planes but i don’t think it’ll give me what i wanted. So is there anyway i can model it or do i have to use planes?

Zbrush model i’m referencing

Hi for me what I will do is I will use plane to shape the hair strands and once i am happy with it, I will extrude it so that it will have some thickness.

Those shapes look clumpy and geometric, which should make them easier to model. On top of that, she is wearing a helmet, which means you can hide all your seams there.

I would start with some cone objects and bend them into shape to create the overall form. Then once I was happy with the silhouette, I would go in and add extra cuts or whatever was needed to create better curvature.

You can do as methodj suggested,
a quick way to shape objects with volume (such as a cylidner or a cone) nicely is to apply a wire deformer to them. So you could make a simple rig for one of those hair streams, and then duplicate the mesh after you moved and shaped it into position every time. That way you can get that head done fairly quickly. If you make a good UV layout before you start that process, you can be very flexible afterwards in terms of editing multiple hair objects at once.
