How to make prof AO or environment pass

Hi readers,

I just started my inturnship at a small 3d animation company and they use a Mental ray AO shader as a pass for all the animations.
I did a little research in mental ray. And there are some problems i found with making a good AO pass.
*Why can’t i use a skylight to render my AO
*Final gather is not animation friendly unless you spend some hard rendering time
*I can make some nice AO with Lighttracer. But not without losing all my bumps and textures.
*Mental ray got a nice AO environment pass. But it’s heavy stuff and is it used in the industry?

So I was just wondering how all the big company’s in the industry use the AO pass to make there comp. Is it just a regualar AO pass or do they have a fancy way to make a good pass.
