subject line says it…
anybody got any good tips? I know it’s possible 'cause there’s one in the primitives library on the CD, rather than use that, I wanna know “how”…
How to make a "pipe" with a 90 degree bend
Extrusion. I tried the FFD box but that didnt work to well for me.
Create a circle, extrude about five times for a nice bend, with the first and last to hold the splines in place, and the middle three rotated around the center of the bend.
More detailed explenation just in case.
Turn on grid snapping.
From front view:
Lathe a two point spline.
If cylinder tapers, delete one circle.
Extrude circle to create length of pipe you want.
Extrude once more at the beginning of the bend
Extrude again, reposition to make sure it is at the same place as the spline it was extruded again. Modify pivot point, placing it at the center of the 90 degree arc.
Rotate 30degrees
Repreat three times.
Extrude just a small ways to cap the curve, and continue the pipe.
If you want to add the thickness of a pipe, simply before beginning the bend create a spline to cap the old one, extrude, scale up the new circle, reposition over old, and begin the curve.
Lathe a spline so it becomes a circle, then lathe the circle(it has to be turned so it faceing the front view.) You should have a doughnut shape now. You can now delete 3/4 of the doghnut. Then U should have a 90° bend.
(It´s maybe necessary to set up the crosssections on the lathe.) U have to have 8 in crossssection when U lathe into the doughnut shape, but can use 4 on the circle.
I spoke to soon, I’m still not getting the pivot position right when I do my extrudes/rotates- any chance someone could post pictures?
i would suggest doing Daft’s method. That seems more efficient.
however for the learning process (i only use 8.5 right now so this isnt current), in the properties menu with the group selected you can set the position of the selected group’s pivot/scale point. have it in line with the last segment of the extrude. move it out according to the length of the arc you want to make.
or hit rotate and select the very center of the widget and drag that over. it helps positioning if you have everything lined up with the snap to grid option, so that everything returns to the same spot.
would make screen captures but im not at home right now.
