i made some experiments with subsurface scattering with maya/mentalray but i cant see the objects on the background.
any suggestions?

Assuming the red lines are separate objects, this could be done easily in vray by reducing refraction glossiness of the case. 0.5-0.6 should do it. I’m sure mental ray would have a similar setting.
