How to get THIS desired effect?!

Hey, Im working on coloring some lineart in Photoshop, and Im trying to get a particular style going, but I feel photoshop is holding me back. Here’s the kind of style Im aiming for:

When I try to use the dodge tool for the shading, I get splotchy, ugly results, not the nice and smooth colors like in the image linked here. Of course, if I use a paint brush, then the results are smoother, but then i have to change the brush color again and again and again to get all the different layers of color in there.

Is there any tutorials out there that might help me with this style. Or perhaps more importantly, are there any brushes out there for download that help with the painted comic style.

Thanks so much as always,

Matt

Changing colors? It sounds like you dont have a tablet. You should get a tablet for that style.

But, with a mouse, this style is probably better:

I do have a tablet

But with that example, you don’t need to change color all the time if you have a tablet. Pen pressure and tilt should be enough.

No, I think he’s talking about the complex color shifts produced by the Dodge tool and by the Color Dodge blending mode. A tablet doesn’t allow you to do that with a normal brush.

Mjkennedy, I highly doubt the comic you linked to was shaded exclusively using the Dodge tool. The greenish glow around the object at the top was probably heavily modified using a Color Dodge layer, but the faces appear to have been shaded entirely with the Brush tool. The artist might have added a tiny bit of pizazz to the highlights using Color Dodge, but for the most part, he appears to have simply colored it manually. That’s really the best way to go; it gives you a lot more flexibility and precision. Yes, it means picking colors fairly frequently, but that’s not such a big deal.

Yeah, I understand what you’re saying.

I guess Im just trying to decide what I should paint with; painter, or photoshop? Like I said, Im going for a style similar to what’s in the linked picture. I dont want to do the “hard edged” cell shaded anime look, nor do I want the uber soft airbrush look. I like the semi painted look that’s somewhere between those two styles.

It seems to me that painter can give you that effect quite easily, as most all of the “painter” artwork I see has a style similar to what Im looking for. HOWEVER, I have seen people acheive the same look in photoshop, and while it seems to be harder to get, Im willing to try and find out how to do it in photoshop, because I just dont have time to learn another prorgram

P.S. as another reference, the style achieved in the graphic novel “The Hedge Knight” by Mike S Miller and Mike Crowell is again the style Im shooting for.
