How to create "turbulence tubes"

#1

hi,

I am looking for a way to create something… well like these turbulent tubes flowing away from the logo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k2VSczDfVI&t=2m56s&hd=1
(also at 2:25 right after he charges his hammer)

I have found no tutorial or any other information on effects like that so I guess I am mainly missing the right name to search for it myself.
however so far I thought about driving some particles with a fluid but since I haven’t used fluids that much yet the outcome was not that satisfying until now.

any kind of help would be much appreciated, thanks a lot.

Not 100% sure what you mean, i think my browser didnt like the codec for the movie but what I managed to see was the end with the logo. If its that effect then try using a volume axis field turbulence rather than the standard turbulence field and sim using particle streaks. The volume axis turbulence uses a better noise solution - curl I believe so it will gove you those nice spidery, tubular patterns.

yes I think we are talking exactly about the same thing. thanks I’ll have a look at the volume axis field

btw I figured that solar flares would come pretty close to what I would like to achieve.

I think you lower the conserve value on the particleShape down to zero also, that allows the velocity to remain constant instead of accelerating off into space, I dont know have a play.
