How to create a landscape from original map landscape

Hallo everybody,
I’m starting with Vue and I’like to re-create a landscape based on the original geographic maps.
(Sometimes, these maps could be also old) But first, I should ask which kind of geographic maps I need to make that…
In essence, I would like to know if and how to import maps in Vue so that they can be recognized ti rebuild original landscape, or if you can still do this type of operation (create a landscape that actually exists based on geographical maps and panoramic photographs) in Vue.

Many thanks!

Bye

Anybody knows something about it?

2nd tutorial from bottom. Free to watch online or pay to download.

  1. Modeling island from referance image.

Many thanks, I’m going to study it. If I have problems I’ll post again.

THX!

No, no, no…
I mean e really credible 3d terrain rebuild from orginal geographic map!

I know we have to use DEM file o geoTiff file as reference image…

Same place…

27 USGS (DEM) terrains [11:38]

Very good now. I’m going to see the tutorial and if I have problems, I’ll post.

Really many thx!

You’re probably finding out that Vue is not the right app for that. Vue is a generalized scene renderer. It doesn’t handle specific detail very well. Most DEM-style generators and renderers are designed for in-house use. That’s why 99.9% of users are happy with what they get free from Google Earth maps.

“You’re probably finding out that Vue is not the right app for that.”

What is? Vue is used in CG movies and so is Terragen.

“Most DEM-style generators and renderers are designed for in-house use.”

Well, He can only use what he and the majority of people have access to. He’s asking for a way of importing real world terrain characteristics in order, I assume, to render a reasonable representation of a known location…which Vue and Terragen can do.

“That’s why 99.9% of users are happy with what they get free from Google Earth maps.”

But I don’t think most uses of Google Earth are intended for animations or still shots, unlike Vue or Terragen.

Note how close the camera ever gets to Vue or Terragen rendered terrain in movies. The detail just is not there.

#11

You are assuming that the camera in his project needs to be yards away from any terrain elevation, which I didn’t read into that from him. He basically said it needs to be recognizable.

But to your point, what camera get’s close to any CG terrain in a movie…at that level, they go to a real life physical background.

I was hoping you were not going to ask that question. So now I have to find the movie link I just looked at the day before yesterday that has detailed Mars terrain animation and the camera is in orbit and is at ground level and it looks very good either way. No models. I’ll find it for you.

But, yes. The other choice is to build a model of Mars like Disney did for his Mission to Mars ride.

#13

Lol. Well, when you get the chance, I would be interested in reading about it (looking at it). Thanks.

But back to the OP, I guess we will wait for the starter of the thread to clarify his/her needs and if Vue/Terrangen will be sufficient. If it’s not, perhaps you can help there because I am not aware of any other niche software available.

EDIT: how about this…

I think Vue or Terragen can do this level though.

Nope. Not even close. It’s bugging me now that I can’t find the site. It wasn’t a YouTube video. Some university study site of some kind using their own 3D software. It has some procedural stuff going on, but I can’t tell for sure. It’s very detailed. Very recent post too. And no, not the Terragen video from 2004 of Mars which looked good which Vue is still working at being. http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/tg2/mars_v14.mp4

#15

Well I found something of similar quality to what I was looking for. It’s from the University of Arizona. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyEqv9aIy8E&feature=related

It’s the same group from the link I gave.

Here are more of the videos on the youtube channel…one of them maybe the one you were thinking of.

The individual doesn’t have the software available for the public yet accoriding to the website.

I am impressed with the software in that the animation doesn’t seem to have any flickering but I did see some “video game shearing”, for lack of a better phrase. Other than that, it doesn’t get any closer than what I have seen Vue or Terragen do…so I am still sticking to the point of view that Vue and Terragen are still the best commerical options for anybody nad can look as good as this.

EDIT: here is another link discussing his program.

Terragen will be first at doing hi-res terrain. E-on’s Vue is still years behind and has become more of a hobby for people wanting to just render their newly bought landscape content. GeoControl can do better terrain than Vue right now. I use it instead of Vue’s terrain editor.

#18

My understanding is that Vue, T2 and Geocontrol all have a 4096x4096 max terrain grid size.
Also Vue and T2 both have procedurally generated terrain options that are not limited.

So, I don’t know why you think T2 is years ahead of Vue or that Geocontrol can handle a larger sized terrain, when it can’t unless by “better terrain”, you mean in the design aspect, which is a subjective opinion you can hold but I am sure is debatable.

#19

You’re right. Maybe tomorrow someone will post on the web somewhere some animated terrain footage they did in Vue that has lots of detail.

LOL, where’s Dax Pandhi when I need him.
