I’m new to maya, and I was wondering how do you clean up the geometry that has been rigged and animated and gets some weird deformations on the geometry. Is there a tool in maya for that? Like something that smoothens out the mesh but preserves volume? How does one go about fixing that?

Your weights are off on your verts. This is why your geometry is not deforming properly the way you want it to. This is a very heavy and complex subject on its own and I definitely recommend looking into it some more.

Try that and see if painting the correct weights help.
