how to achieve this lighting?

#1

Hi Cgtalkers,

I’m fairly new to 3dsmax lighting, but im currently using 3dsmax09 VRAY as my renderer.
Attached are my testrender + originalrender pictures
I’d like to achieve this lighting on originalrender, especially the neon glow behind the television, but I’m still stuck here.
Please advice and thanks very much for your time

hi, well about the “neon” light. looks like its just a vraylight plane facing the wall so the light spills sideways.

and the tv screen is a vray light material, to make it look like its “alive”.

Thats great, but do you know how to do it with Mental Ray? :stuck_out_tongue:

same thing i guess, but using an area light. the light can either be facing the back wall or 1 light facing each side.

could be done using light materials aswell, like if it were simulating an actual fluorescent light back there. just a matter of getting the distance and intensity right.

Put a light or self-illuminated geometry behind an object & enable final gather.

The original poster is using Vray though. Please don’t hijack his thread. Vray and MR are totally different and if the OP needs our help, all this extra stuff will just bother and/or confuse him.

But, just make a plane to fit, attach your image (for the TV), and also connect the image to the “Additional Color” slot in the mia_material. If Max doesn’t have that slot… I’d go back to Vray. If you already have access to Vray, there’s really no reason to use mental ray, unless you’re just feeling masochistic.

It does. But in Max Jeff 's way is preferred.

mr in Max is WAY better integrated than Maya. I use both daily here (and Vray a couple times a month). Max has almost none of the same mr problems as Maya. Its not perfect, but certainly is not the hastle it is Maya.

Mike

Thanks for the additional info, Mike. After six years of slaving in Maya, the MR integration has crushed my soul. I’m producing 2 pieces of art a year now, instead of 10-50 or more. I am sick of it, and although I love many aspects of Maya, will be adding Max to my toolbox this year instead of Maya 2011…
