I would model 3 or 4 leaves, then texture them. That is to say, you want three or four flat planes, perhaps slightly bent or tilted on some corners a bit, then apply textures using cutout opacity for the leaf edges.

Then, simply instance them into your scene! It will take no more RAM to do a million than it will to do four. It will however render much slower, so in your shaders limit the transparency to say, 2 raytrace depth, and it’ll likely speed things up a lot.
