How much RAM is needed for Subsurf?

#1

Hi there

How much RAM is needed for SubSurf levels, five and six? Especially for liquid animations

There is no rule. Fluid simulation takes more than 1GB of memory in resolution 150/150/100 on my 64 bit system. It depends on domain resolution mostly and subsurf have less impact.
If someone uses subsurf on level higher than 4 it means he does a bad job. It is wastefull and doesn’t help in terms of artistic quality.

besides the smooth modifer works much better then subsurf with fluids

#4

it doesn’t add resolution to the mesh though…

What about what the liquid is, if it is water, or oceans then? Subsurf can be used to increase the detail.

Subsurf is not about increasing detail. There are far more efficient schemes to save memory. Sculpting does a better job memory-wise if it is detail you want. A simple subdivide with displace modifier is less memory intensive than subsurf. And then there is this per pixel displacement thing in the newer builds that give you incredible details without using almost no extra memory.

Well, there is a now old tutorial from cog films, subsurf was used partly to help create more detail. Yes subsurfs help too, but can also crash the PC for with far too many. 1GB of RAM is enough for enhanced detail…or even a little more than that.
