How long does/should it take to Auto Paint?

#1

After many tries to auto paint without much luck I came across Karen Sperling’s YouTube tutorial (many thanks Karen) I selected the Artists Sargent Brush - smart stroke and smart settings 23 hours later it is still painting, is this normal?

While I was experimenting I discovered that while auto painting If I clicked my mouse anywhere it would stop painting no multi tasking at all, can’t check email, browse the web, text edit nothing, I can move the mouse around but if I click anywhere auto painting stops, is this normal?

Using Painter 11, a new macbook duo core 4gb it is running alone nothing else in the background haven’t touched it. I am Painting a family portrait 6 people from the waist up with a mostly black background 4080 pixels x 4080 pixels. I have read and done my best to set preferences, turn off enhanced ghost turn back undo etc.

Fortunately I have a pc to browse the web and ask this question I want to finish my painting but I also want my mac back

Please help

Any other newbies out there the 3 part tutorial from Karen is great easy to follow, just wish my computer would paint a little faster!

Hi Rod

My guess is your image is too large. You don’t say what ppi you’ve chosen. Either make your image smaller (maybe around 20 cm x 20cm instead of over 30cm x 30cm) or make the resolution smaller, ie no higher than 300 ppi. If 300 is still too slow try 200 or 150. You may be able to get away with a larger image size with a 150 ppi. After it’s finished auto painting you can try to resize it, then perhaps give a little sharpening to the image. Not ideal but better than nothing.

Which settings do you have selected in the auto painting palette? If you dont have the smart(s) selected it will paint forever…

Thank you for the replies.

As explained on another board ppi is irrelevant, the photo I was working on is 17"x17" at 240 ppi which = 4080x4080 pixels a 30cmx30cm at 300ppi = 3544x3544 pixels.

I was using the sargent brush auto-painting with smart settings selected.

I wouldn’t think this was a very large photo, I finally stopped it this morning after running for 35 hours and it still doesn’t look close to being finished.

This makes no since to me.

Still wondering should I be able to multi-task on my macbook while auto-painting if I click the mouse anywhere, do anything whatsoever with it the auto painting stops, it sat there for 35 hours untouched and still painting enough is enough :buttrock:

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. We have been testing to see if we have the same issues. I have the same size image (roughly) and I can get Painter to autopaint reasonably quick. http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Content/1153321224268?pid=1234450613802
Let me know if that helps.

Thanks for the reply and testing, I haven’t used painter much since posting (got side tracked). I installed the update the day it came out and haven’t noticed much difference, but haven’t used it enough before or after to be a good judge. Still wondering if I should be able to multi-task while auto painting? I can’t do this on mac or pc is there a way around this?

Thanks
Rod
