how do you lock down a tga alpha channel when applying an effect?

Hey guys,

very new to after effects, cant seem to find the solution to this :frowning:

very simple, want to lock the alpha channel so I can apply a blur within, so the edge remains preserved. I then want to apply a more subtle blur to the edge.

appreciate any help.
