When you are just sketching, not a pre-planned image, how do you go about choosing all the different colors, lighting, and shadows? Do you just play around with the color wheel, do you use some kind of blending… I am just curious because I know that I am not very good about using the colors to the best advantage, and was wondering how some of you artists do it.

I’ve just started making thumbnails of the complete image. Doing it small allows you to play around with different ideas and approaches quickly, which I think is The Way To Go. Whenever I try to “reason” a color into a painting, it always looks like crap.

experiment lots.
if your not sure show some of your friends some of your concepts. sometimes this can help (but not always)
