How do you change a bump map into a displacement map?

#1

Hi, I am trying to change a texture map on a fish model. It is currently a bump map…I want to change it to a displacement map, to make it look more realistic

could someone tell me how to do that. Hope this doesn’t sound like to “Newbie” a question

PS. I am using Maya 2013

Actually you should be able to use the bump as a displacement map. The only difference being that in the case of a bump map it is not actually “displacing” the geometry. One thing that I would also caution about is that I have often seen artists think that displacement maps are required for realism. You might be surprised just how much you can get away with using good modeling techniques and bump maps. To use displacement maps can be very expensive resource wise. So personally I always try to use bump maps first and then if I find that that is just not enough I will switch to a displacement.
Also out of curiosity where did the bump map come from? If it came from zbrush for example you should be able to kick out a displacement map from there.

That is good advice about the bump map Displacement map difference. The Bump map came from Mudbox, so I can would have to do from that software…(personally I have ZBrush and prefer it:)
