How do studios get development kits? (PS3)

#1

I’m just curious, is there a super secret ferari enzo-esque list for people who can buy development kits for consoles?

I’ve been googling all afternoon trying to find out how to get my hands on the PS3 dev kit, and damned if I can find even one link.

I guess that you need contact to SCE, and they will investigate whether you have the capability to develop a game for ps3.

#3

you probably need to be part of one of the company’s that signed on for the PS3. Other wise I don’t think they just give them out to the general public.

#4

I think you need to be part of one of the company’s thats signed on for the PS3. Chances are they aren’t handing these things out to anybody.

#5

Why? are you looking into game development? You might not have to buy the PS3 development kit. Chance are you just gotta wait for the PS3 Linux kit, start a independent development without the high license fee!!

thats why im gonna do  to get a taste of game development. I want to redo, a part of the ShenMue 1 game.

nice site, on PS2 Linux kit game development:
http://forums.ps2dev.org/

Why? Well because I’ve seen several fan-boy independant websites claiming they are developing games for the XBOX360… which lead me to believe that at least for the 360 obtaining the development tools must be a possible feat for non-studio game development. I was hoping that was also going to be true for the PS3, as I also am looking into finding investors for a start-up indy studio.

Great im looking for a job in a indy studio! . Nice concept art! I think the XBOX and maybe even the 360 has different access level compare to PS3, Sony is more strick about it.

Im just curious, what website did you see that at?i’d to check it out. Starting your own studio, thats my dream…just not ready yet, dont have the experience or the $$$. What kinda game do you want to make?

Like i said, theres still the option of indy development thru the PS3 Linux kit, once you get a demo of the game, you can pimp it to a publisher. PS3 thats a year off…

I think you’ll find it very hard to get any development kits for either PS3 or Xbox 360 at the moment, especialy if you are only an indie set-up. I’ve worked in the industry for a while developing on the PS2, I know that when our company originaly got our development kits from sony there was a strict procedure in order to sign up and a lot of money up front for the devkits and developer licence, e.g. about £10,000 for one devkit, not sure how much for the developer licence. This was at a similar point in the PS2’s life as the PS3 is today.

Basicaly it costs a hell of a lot of money, and is very hard for a small indie company to have the resources to invest.

Of course if you have potential investors already etc, it might not be an obstical. Otherwise your best bet would be to start developing you idea on the PC.

I probably wouldn’t believe them. Many fan-boys claimed that they were developing titles for the original XBOX and they never got their hands on an official XDK which means they never actually got to do anything really useful except doing some things with OpenXDK. So, its expensive, and even if you had the money, it doesn’t mean you will get one. Sony and Microsoft reviews the companies that apply for a devkit, and they reject many.

#10

yup.
fan boys are lying

the xenon dev kits are WIP hardware anyway… and MS were pretty cagey about handing them out.

even more so Sony.
ironically; Sony actually have asked for a list of people who would have access to the Ps3 dev kits as they ned to run thorough background checks
PS3 is classed as a supercomputer, and falls under the same rules as computers meant for military usage, checks are run to avoid falling into the wrong hands and some bad person coding up weapons of mass refraction
(ie: no risk of being misued to code and create nuclear control software, guidance systems etc…)
there you have it

The Fan boys are full of it. You need to be working with a publisher that has working relations with either Sony or Microsoft to obtain next gen dev kits at this time. Most 3rd party developers are simply using PC’s for developing thier next gen tool sets at this time, making assumptions as to what the next gen hardware will be able to handle.

#12

I remember a contest a couple of years back when the Dreamcas came out that my freinds and I tried where if you made a great game idea and sent it to SEGA they would give out a total of 10 dev kits to non studio teams who had a good idea and the potential to do something.

as Middle Schoolers we thought we had a shot with a comedy RPG game. now I realize that we had no shot even if our idea was pretty original and good.

#13

You need to have lots of dollars and be a game development studio. Fanboys on the internet are liars.

#14

not nessesarily true.
Certain developers who have relationships with the hardware manufacturers do Indeed have kits.
Publishers are more of a middle man if the developer is unproven/has doubts over longevity and finances…

#15

looking for one of these?

#16

and you GUARANTEE sony will be kicking that company’s ass with as much legal muster as they can find…

NDA is done for a reason.
This guy/studio is going to be in deep kakka methinks.

#17

BradW is that true? Whats the source on the supercomputer information. I’d like to read up on that.

#18

it’s along process costing lots of money.
if not already a company with published tiltes on the platform when you approach sony or ms or at least published titles.
you’ll need such things as
proof of company viabitlity-have you got the cash
proof of technology-usually dog and pony to show you can make a game
submission of concept-idea for game with info on engine specs, art specs, game design…
which must be signed off on by sony or ms who may require changes before approval
submission of game team-doc on your team(skills, education, past projects…)
plus many more steps.

dev kits first go to internal teams, then 1st party major developers with previous license…
on down the line with small start ups way at the back of the line (unless you really can impress them with the above mentions items so they just have to have your game). normally expect a wait of a year or more after a new system is introduced before they get to you.

Microsoft at one time had a program to help small developers to put games on the xbox, mainly due to the fact when it first came out a number of companys weren’t interested in making titles for the system. they might still have such a program, you might check.
