How do I randomly scatter debris onto a plane?

#1

This is a problem I have encountered trying to create a abandoned scene. I want lots of rocks and bricks and plants and pieces of metal scattered around a warehouse. I built about 12 different pieces of geometry and I want them to duplicate random scale, rotation, etc. In blender I remember using a particle system tied to the geometry to accomplish this. However I am very new to Maya and I don’t know how to do this. I have tried a couple mel scripts but they aren’t giving me the right results.

You’ll definitely be able to accomplish this with nParticles in maya. The general workflow might involve setting up an emitter above your scene, and turning your objects and ground into a collider. You can use the particle instancer to specify which objects get instanced as particles. There is plenty of great documentation and tutorials about nParticles if you search :).

I looked for the better part of 3 hours today and I couldn’t find a satisfactory explanation. I’m using the particle emitter as you said but it is not doing what I’d like. It just spreads way to many objects out to the edges of the building. If you could like me to something that would be great this is really killing my progress.

EDIT: I said that and then immediately figured out what I was doing wrong sooo I set the particles to emit from the ground and turned off gravity.
