how do I place a 2d texture in a specific spot on my model?

#1

I’ve just started learning how to model characters in Maya.

I have created my first character and I am on the texturing phase. My end goal is one texture for the skin. And individual textures for the facial features. This model is similar to an Xbox avatars facial features.

What do I need to do to place a mouth or eyeball 2d texture in a single spot on the face? I’ve tried messing with a layered texture but I haven’t been able to get just one mouth. It usually tiles it everywhere.

Thank you for your posts.

Have you tried to create UV Map for your character? If we’re talking just about diffuse map then the best way is to have everything in one texture like, skin, eyes, lips, ears, hairs etc. It’s not simple but you have guarantee that it’ll look good and realistic.

Here is a little tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZzzROb9WxI

You can find it more on Google and YT

I want to modify the eyes and mouth without changing the skin texture.

I use the x box avatar as my example. ;).

Thank you for the video though.

Then you have to use a different material for these.

I am modeling a new character as one single polygon object.

I Have a single skin texture that covers the whole body.

What is the method to apply a second texture to the model and place it on a specific section of the model. Without modeling additional geometry.

Do i need to hav a layered texture ?
Do i need to use a projection map on to the specified faces ?

What i understand is I will need a texture fore each eye and one for the mouth.

Thank you for the feedback and guidance so far. I hope that this helps describe it better then my initial post.

I’m not entirely sure I understand your last post, but I’ll take a shot at it.

If you group the parts of your model, you can move the islands around on your UV map. Then you can texture the whole thing and be sure the differnent parts have the textures you want them to have.

It would be good if you could make eyes and mouth (I mean: not lips if this was what you meant) as separate objects. It’s making life a much easier  Then you shouldn’t have a problem with texture it.
