How do I make an approximated hexagonal sphere?

#1

I’m trying to create a sphere’ish mesh made up of hexagons for a shield-like effect. And before going any further, let me stop you before you throw euclidean math in my face. I know that it’s impossible to make a sphere of perfect hexagons. That isn’t what I’m trying to make either. I’m perfectly alright with them being a little whonky, as long as the end result is a seemingly uniform hex mesh in the shape of a sphere, preferably without any noticeable pinching at the poles etc.

So, have anyone got any ideas on how to achieve this? If it’s relevant, I mainly work in Maya.

what are you using to make it?

maybe check this out?

Create > Polygon Primitives > Soccer Ball creates a sphere with hexagonal faces. It doesn’t look like there is a way to change the number of hexagons involved, however.

I don’t think it’s mathematically possible to change the number of hexagons involved.

I’ve got an idea on how to make this work, it involves pentagons!
