I have a layer I imported from photoshop of a White silhouetted lions head. I want to make this layer pick up the Effect Layer under it in After Effects by using a mask. Does that mask have to be on the same layer as the effect and is there a way to convert my silhouette into a mask?
How do I convert Layer to a Mask?

So I figured out an easier way to solve this. Just by dragging the effect straight onto my layer that I wanted to convert to a mask. :hmm:

Layer --> Auto Trace for masks. What you describe however sounds like you simply want to use the head as a matte for another layer, so simply set the respective layer modes…

There are several ways to convert a layer to a mask (turn on modes column in your timeline) - alpha track matte and luma track matte or alpha silhouette etc… Depends on the end result you want. Obviously you figured something even easier out.
