How can I create a scree?

#1

Hi folks,

I’m pretty new to vue, and I’m finding it very useful. It’s a fantastic program, and I’m really looking forward to using it more in my projects.

I have a rather specific question. I’m creating a triassic scene as part of a museum display, and it will feature a desert playa with a small lage in the middle. There will be grey limestone hills in the distance. I’m having trouble getting the right effect on the hills, I want to include rocky screes but I can’t seems to get a good effect. Can anyone offer any tips? Also, in the center of the scene I’d like to have a drying lake surrounded by mud which blends into a dry-cracked clay like surface. How can I make a convincing blend between the lake, mud and clay? Also, it would be great to be able to have dinosaur footprints in the wet mud (the display is all about dino prints so it’s pretty crucial to have them), I haven’t got a clue how to achieve this, tips?

I know thats alot of question, I’d appreciate any help you guys could offer :).

Will.

…I’m not certain what scree, a lage, or a playa is, but if you need rocks and scrub brush you can import those and instance them as ecosystems, then paint them onto your terrain.

To make material transitions you can use slope and/or altitude in your materials, and then make three materials blend together that way.

Or, just use Photoshop.

A scree is like an unmoving alalanche of small rocks down a mountain side, where they have broken off of steep slopes and fallen down creating a fan shaped collection of rocks. A playa is a dried up lake, kind of like a salt flat. “Lage” is a typo, I meant lake :). Here’s what I have so far, but it’s a WIP:

The footprints look good so far, only I’d variate them a bit. Not such a straight path, maybe a bit of meandering?

Scree you could probably make by painting Ecosystem rocks? Try it!

Thw brush doesn’t seem to have a twist option, so I don’t know if I can switch their direction. I’ll probably just go back into photoshop and make all the footprints I need as a stamp brush and then stamp them into the terrain. I’ll try the ecosystem painter :).
