Hot Air Balloon/Nurbs Help

#1

Hello all,

I am making a hot air balloon scene in 3ds max 2009. I know there are several ways one could accomplish this, but because I am going for ultra realism, I figured the best way was to use nurbs. If anyone has better idea’s, please let me know.

I am modeling the balloon after Cameron Balloon’s A-140 which has 20 gores. I created a spline star with 20 points and fillet the radius of the points to create an arc rather than a point. I then cloned several copies of the star shape and scaled those shapes to create cross sections of the balloon. I converted all of the spline stars to nurbs and finally used the U Loft to create the surface of the balloon itself.

My problem however is that when I apply the U Loft, the final surface doesn’t maintain the original shape of the converted spline stars. I have posted an image below to show the method I used within max, and a second image showing the incorrect shape.

Can anyone point me in the direction needed so that the U Loft maintains the proper shape or offer another method that I can create the 20 arc gores while achieving the shaping of a hot air balloon? Many thanks for the help.

Regards,

Chad
