HMC22: Self Portrait: Eric Bilodeau

#1

Hi guys, I’ve been really sad not to be able to participate in HMC20 and 21 'caus I was overwhelmed with work but I couldn’t miss this one as I wanted to try modeling and sculpting a head for some time. I chose to go towards classical portraits from the 17th century to the early 20th, I picked a few interesting ones as examples, I am looking for the very formal site of these images, I also put a link to REIV’s incredible image entitled “ColdBlue” because it’s the closest to my idea of the self portrait:

I started with images of me:

And I did the modeling with drawing the main axis of the face first:

I am now adding details, starting with the nose, jaw and lips:

Of course comments and critics are very welcome, it’s my first anatomical modeling so I expect I will make mistakes…

excellent choice - I love those classical portraits - should be fun to watch. The profile’s definitely starting to look like you already

Thanks Intervain;) I should be able to model some more tonight

Pretty good looking start. Hard to give much crit yet. All I can do is give my 2 cents of advice (which isn’t much cause I haven’t done a lot of anatomical work either). Mostly just find a good basemesh online like on pixologic or gnomonworkshop. Both have free .objs you can download. Obviously this isn’t to use this base, but just to see how they structure the edgeloops and flow. Having a reference to look at can really help when you get to doing ears and attaching them to the head. Of course, if you are going into zbrush or mudbox it might be easier just to create some density where the ear will be and just sculpt that part. Still, I personally like to do my basemeshes in maya where I have more control. Anyway, have fun with it, there is no 1 right way to build a human so good luck.

Good choice, it would be a nice bonus to see the final model textured and processed to look like the original paintings.

Thanks for the comments guys,

@grantmoore3d: Yup, I thought about it too, I dunno if I will have time but it could be very nice.

#8

OK,

I did have some time to work on it today. Here is where I am at:

OK,

The basic modeling of the head looks like that: I put a little more resolution on the right one that highlights my mistakes near the eye and on the cheek. I plan to learn the sculpt tools to finish the head.
