Hey all,

One thing to watch out for is the amount of perspective when taking photos that close. If you want reference images that are closer to orthographic, set the camera far away and zoom in to take the photo, this reduce the depth of field and is easier to use when modeling.
Hey all,
Thanks for the tips. I will keep them in mind. Here is day 1 progress. I hoping to have a lot more done by Thursday of this week.
All,
Screen caps from day 2 Progress. Right now I’m focusing on creating the mesh. I’m not worried about how it looks as much. Once the model is shelled out… I will be cutting it into sections to add in more detail and clean up the wire frame. My front and side image views don’t line up exactly, so its been a little of a pain shelling out this mesh. I going with the front view for now.
Yeah, shooting your own photos can be tough to line up. Focusing on one is probably your best bet. Also keep a mirror handy on your desk. Your ultimate reference is right in front of you so make use of it.
one thing i found pretty handy when i worked on mine was i have a webcam built into my laptop so i had it open side by side with zbrush which alloed me to match up pretty much every angle as best i could…
so if you have a webcam handy it might be a good idea to have it running alongside…
It’s sometimes a good way to start like this, but i never do that anymore. You can never have the right references that are correct.
If you have someone to shoot the photo’s for you, try to put the camera at a max distance from your face as possible. The further away you are, the less distortion to get.
Afterwards when you are done with the base mesh, try and adjust it as much as possible while looking at your own face in a mirror or such. This base mesh will be so distorted because of the already distorted images. Don’t forget you are already modeling inside a viewport that also have perspective distortions.
heh I like that webcam idea… about the model - I think you should change the topology around your eyeballs - the circular lineflow should start lower down, where the skull would have it’s eyeholes. Other than that nice start
Keep going
All,
Thank you all for the input. Overall it helps a lot. I will look into a lot of your photo shoot ideas on my next project. I think its great to be flexible as an artist. Sometimes its good not to relay on perfect reference. I’m saying this because you may not always be able to obtain great reference photos. But having said that its important to be correct when your modeling something. So lets say it can be a 2 way street.lol. I love the we cam idea. I should be posting photos of my progress tonight. I took the weekend off. Im not really worried about a perfect mesh right now. Its important… but I getting down some of the base details. I can always rebuild and project on surface in zbrush. which is great practice for me.

All,
It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything for this contest. I wanted to spend a little more time in maya before I get into it with Zbrush. Hopefully I will be zbrushing by next weekend. I took more photos of myself dressed up. I hope it helps. The front view is coming along but I know the profile needs work. I hope to fix this in zbrush. Right now I have to correct the mouth… it should be a little wider. My noise can be more defined.
Here is my Reference image:
This is starting to look really good, how you’re managing to get such a good likeness from distorted ref images I’ll never know but it’s working.
Fantastic original sculpture I’d be really interested in the Artist and where it is.
No work on the sculpting or the body yet ?
Still think the back of the head is a bit too narrow, and the ears too flat too.
cheers, still a little time left.
Hey Brother, good to see you working on this competition. So far so good. I really hope you FINISH this Al! Keep up the good work!
