Looking really good so far, my only comment at the moment is with the current lighting you cant see his left nostril really, which makes it look odd, but obviously its not you final lighting. I think this is already turning out to be one of your best pieces I have seen. Keep up the good work.

I like the expression. A little older, a little wiser perhaps. So uh, how about the rest of the hair and not just a cropped version.
j/k I have no idea how I’m going to handle the hair.
Looking good Paul.
apparently i take the rules too seriously. I would suggest changing the name of the competition to hardcore sculpting challenge since thats whats going on. Great work, i dont like the hair much though… Cheers and see you later…
Sorry for going off topic again, just wanted him to know that there is nothing wrong with using ZBrush on these.
In any case, this is a great thread to watch. I’d almost be tempted to put a hat on his head or something, the hair is distracting me from the great face. If you do the hair as well as the rest of the face it’ll look awesome!
agreed, i’d prefer this wasn’t played out in my thread, or at all…its been discussed enough in the past…
i’m of course still working on the hair, I’ll be trying a few different styles over the weekend, it’d look better if i could render all the hair natively in vray, but my laptop can’t handle it. It can handle the eyebrows but goes wobbly when i try to do the full head of hair…
but yeah it’s something i’ll work on…
so i persevered and found a combo of settings that’d let my laptop render the hair in vray with it still looking okay…
it’s still being comped over the bald head (with some post work after the fact, to match it up) but i think it’s a better result than combining the standard render hair with the vray head.
i also didn’t crop as much hair off this time…lol…

now to try a different style
so the different hair style experiments didn’t go so well…lol…so i went back to what i had and just tried to make a bit more varied and sparse…
thinning it out took about 10 minutes off the render time too…the head+eyebrows renders in about 5-6 minutes, but the hair itself was taking around 30…it’s down to 20 and I’ll keep fiddling to bring it down…but it should be less in the final image because the head will be smaller in the frame…

I wonder if you could use a combination of alpha mapped planes for the bulk of his hair and fibers to finish the effect. Of course I have no idea how to do that correctly.
Typically though, I usually see the hair painted on the scalp first which helps it blend with the rest of the 3D hair. Again, my results are not as good as I’ve seen others do it so you may want to find better input.
yeh i might try that, but i’m going to have a break from this for a few days, due to the fact its only like 22 hours till the super bowl and I’m way to anxious/excited about that to work…lol…go pack go…
Great work so far!
And guys, if there is a problem with the rules lets move this to the main thread.
well…go pack go!..happiest day of my life so far for me…
so happy in fact i’ve just spent about 700 bucks on merchandise and a super bowl trophy replica…lol…
i probably couldn’t afford it but i wasn’t going to let anyone take it away from me…heh…
i’ll get back to Han later this week, I’m going to move onto the clothes and the rest of the scene for now…
Your doing an amazing work here, the likeness with subject is almos perfect. Recently while learning animation (i think can be translated to modeling in this case), i knew that the best way to animate is to know the character, to know his story, goals, frustrations, past, personality…is he energetic?, is quiet? etc, etc.
If you don´t know the character history, or in this case would be if you know some things but not all, you can always create your own vision or history of what happened to him, and make all kind of definitions of the character to know him better. That way you really can give the character another dimension, so the character is really perceived as real and not only realistic in terms of the external shapes. Right know is looking real already, is looking great really, and i can´t critic or suggest anything related to the modeling. But since you have the head almost done, and there is a lot of time to finish, you can afford (only if you think could worth it), to spend a little time to try to portrait that subtleties that would make anyone says…“that is an old Hand Solo, no question”.
I really hope you don´t go with that last hair style, since the last thing i would say (only because that hair) is “that is an old Hand Solo, no question”.
Well, i wont bother you anymore with this kind of suggestions, i made my point i think. Is just that you´re doing great, but i think you can push the thing a little further (conceptually, not technicaly) to really make this entry, not only posibly winning the HMC, but also an epic interpretation of an old Han Solo.
Last thing…lots of times people do amazing modelig stuff and just pose the character in 30 min…and with issues in the weight or very forced unnatural positions on the hands, arms, etc…WRONG! give your character a nice and natural pose and expression even if take you 2 days to do so.
good luck.
@JM-art: i agree with all that…lol…the hair is something i really need to work out but I’ll leave it for now…
the pose is something i’m also putting a lot of thought into…my initial idea was to create something similar to the han and greedo scene, and then i could name the whole thing “han still shoots first”…but i’m finding it hard to frame…
i’d also though of doing one where he’s like wearily leaning against a wall in an alley with like siren lights and stuff visible in the background
i was just playing around trying to figure out how i can pose him and started spinning the head around and looking at it at different angles…and for some reason this one just struck me as very “han solo”-ish…thoughts?

just trying out a quick pose…the idea is to combine my 2 previous ideas and have han leaning up against something, be it a wall or a post or something, and a stormtrooper in the back pointing at him like he’s found him, but han is waiting and ready with his blaster, so han still shoots first…
his other hand will be in his pocket…
