HMC #29: Sci-fi Icon - FAYE (Cowboy Bebop!)

#1

Hi, Some time since last finished entry, i hope i can make it this time.

I´m going for Faye, nice character, nice girl, from excellent anime…i hope i can make a good 3d portrait of her. I want her to be instantly recognizable, but at the same time not sure if i want to be tied to do her exactly in every aspect. Mostly because is not that fun, and because things that work great in 2d dosné work as well in 3d.

here she is…
guilty as charge

I´ll also try to make a good render so i can add this piece to my portfolio.

Cheers.

an interesting character from an extremely cool show, loved the soundtrack. Looking forward to see how she shapes up

Can´t agree more:thumbsup:…the soundtrack, specially (imo) “the real folk blues” song is mind blowing.

me too really…i´m not sure how to handle the passage from faye 2d to 3d…mostly the eyes and nose are greathly stilized (like usualy in anime) and in 2d they work great, but in 3d is a lot of room for interpretation of volumes…
An alternative can be to make a more humanizaed, flesh and bones Faye, but i´m not sure that i want that for the final output…i´ll see what i can do.

cheers.

Check out this past thread from HMC #20.
Mei, My Neighbor Totoro
Really good example of bringing an anime character to 3D. Main thing to me seems to be keep it clean and simple.

#5

Thanks Wyatt, yes, that 3d version of Mei was EPIC (i participated in that competition as well).
I ckecked the link you posted for a refresh…realy, that version of Mei couldn´t be any better in any way.

Also because that portrait of Mei i started to research more about the character ,Totoro movie, etc…to keep it short…now im a fan of Miyazaki´s movies. From my point of view, i find them to be the best of the best in the animation category.

CHeers.

this might help you decide…I personally really like resin-statue type rendering. The he-man diorama from a few years back is still in my personal hall of fame.

#7

Thanks a lot Sampei, that is usefull, moslty for the ilumination and to have a reference of a volumetric faye. I remember that He-Man entry too…also amazing. But to be honest i don´t want to make a toy or sculpture aproach for the render or modeling…i want her to look more alive, even in a very dinamic pose…that´s another thing i have to think of…uff…i didn´t even a model a box yet!!!

Thanks for the link, that picture will help me in some instances of the proces i´m sure.

#8

Hi, some wip here. The head , legs and arms are just blocked…I´m focus in getting a clean and logical topology in the torso so far…not so much because is required for this model (since it wont be animated and isn´t a realistic aproach), but because is a good oportunity to learn about it.
I´m using references of Faye, and pictures of women too but not inside Maya as blueprints.

#9

Hi there. A wip to show how things are going so far. Not a single thing is finished yet, though the head and body (except hands )have most of the information needed for next steps…lots of things are just blocked, as the hair the cloth.

Sugestions at this point?

Cheers.

Good work, like it.

#11

nice progress, the legs looks slightly long overall…I would focus on the head now and try to get the features working together perfectly. They’re all there and the proportions seem to work, now it’s time to fine tune.
I’d personally also leave the clothes off until the anatomy is good to go, despite the fact she is wearing very little.
Keep up the good work.

#12

@tombery thanks, i´m glad to hear.

@Sampei thanks. She has very long legs in theory but i maybe crossed the line, i think i´ll shorten them a little. Agree with all what you say…thanks for share your opinion.

#13

no problem, take everything I say with a pinch of salt though, as I’m very much a beginner.
