HMC #29 - Chani

#1

I hate to start another challenge I don’t have time to finish but… it is what it is. I can’t help myself.

I plan on modeling Chani from the Dune series. Really, I could’ve picked any of the Fremen characters as they are all fantastic but I’ll go with the more attractive one.

I plan on crafting a mix of Barbora Kodetová from the mini-series and that films elements,

with this excellent concept from Devon Cady-Lee

Cool! My only experience with Dune is the first book in the series that i read. Looks like it’ll be a very challenging project for you, good luck Wyatt.

#3

oooooo I love the first concept on that concept sheet :buttrock:

#4

oh man, i hope there are too many more Dune submissions…

Wyatt, i wait with baited breath…

#5

Awesome choice. I saw that concept pop up on deviantArt a little while a go and loved it.

Edit: Oh wow. Thanks for the link to the projectsand blog. I hadn’t seen that before and it’s brilliant.

#6

+1 - fantastic examples in there, inspiring in the least.

#7

good choice ,and where are you man come on … :bounce:

#8

Alright alright, I think I can finally work on this. Hopefully there is time to finish.
I am loving the new spotlight tools in ZB.

Basemesh

First rough passes in ZB. In my pushing and pulling I seem to have yanked the corners of the mouth and eyes out a bit too far. Now the buggers won’t go back right. Ah well, something to tweak tonight.

Any thoughts or corrections would be appreciated.

Progress on the head so far. I want to give her a more lean look like the book describes. Whipcord strong not water fat. That’s it for the head right now. I started on the body but nothing to show yet.

#10

Looks good wyatt! The head looks a little too deep from forehead to the back of the head, and the ear a little high, but good progress so far! I’m still afraid to do any real production with zbrush…

Hello WyattHarris, interesting choice for an entry. I haven’t seen the series, only saw the Lynch movie and read the first 3 books, and Dune’s Universe is awesome

About your work, it looks to me that the eyes seem to be too much protruted from the head, they are usually more “buried” in the skull/face. In a side view, the eyes touch an imaginary line between the eyebrows and cheek. Also, the cheek seems too slanted, or the cheeks need to recede a bit.

Try to work on the eyes and cheek area at lower subdiv levels before adding more detail, check often your references for landmarks and relationship lines. Also, check for planar analysis of heads, many areas of the face are more planar than round.

Here’s an example of planar analysis I found on google:

Good luck

Thanks a lot for sharing that planar. i keep the link.

lbelerique, japetus - Thanks guys, corrections made. The Move Elastic brush is my new best friend.

Started on the still suit… yeah, got a long way to go.
Basemesh - I’m making the boots separately so the feet are basic.

She has odd proportions in the concept so I’m having a little trouble matching it but it’s slowly coming along.

Okie doke, so that first attempt at the still suit looked terrible to me so I scrapped it and rebuilt it. I’m much happier with this base mesh. I’ve made the mistake in the past of sculpting all of the high-res details and then trying to pose the character, usually with bad results. This time I’m getting that out of the way first. It’s been a while since I’ve done a zsphere rig so I found this 3-part tutorial on youtube. The resulting rig is on the right.

Posed using Transpose Master to get all of the subtools.

Here are the main problem areas. Should be fairly easy to fix at this resolution.

The basic composition for the final image. My idea is she will be peering over the top of a sand dune with crysknife in her right hand. That’s it for now. Good night.

Thanks for that link, it’s something I haven’t tried yet in Zbrush to pose with a z-sphere rig. :buttrock:
Cool idea for your composition, very fremen-ish.
Now get some rest  (time zones and internet is a funny combination, I just wake up :stuck_out_tongue: )
