HMC #28: Comic Master Tribute: Tim Sale

#1

Hey guys! Im new to the HM challenges and couldnt resist to participate when I heard about the topic. I decided to go with Tim Sale, because of his awesome style and unique character designs. I found one of his sketches in particular that caught my eye, it was a sketch of Caption Jack Sparrow from pirates of the Caribbean. Heres the sketch:

Goin to start the base mesh soon. Good luck everyone!

Thanks guys. My updates are goin to be really slow for the next 2 weeks as I am busy with some freelance, but I will try my best to work on this on my free time.
Heres a paintover for his hair. Im also gonna plan what his accesories and clothes are goin to look like before diving right in, should have that real soon. More to come!

p.s: Whats the best way to go about the hair? I was thinking hair planes but then I would have to make a low poly version and texture with alphas…might not have enough time for that. Any advise would be appreciated!

#7

This I would also like to hear.

#8

I would just do a zsphere, then add additional zspheres for the strands of hair and duplicate. They dont have to be individual planes to make it look like real hair. Ryan Kingslien does it all the time.

Cool concept. The basemesh and the sculpt you’ve got going so far is looking spot on too.

#10

Still lots to do…but heres a small Update:

Blocked in the hair roughly, going to add clothes on top of him next, as well as small details like necklaces, hair strands etc…
