HMC#28: Comic Book Master Tribute - Todd McFarlane

#1

Perfect timing! Just finished a project yesterday and will have some time to dedicate to this chalenge… My first HMC.

It’ll be fun to model something Spawn style, with straight lines and sharp angles.

I think ill make a Todd McFarlane version of the night owl, from Watchmen.

Watchmen is one of my favorite comics/graphic novels, and he seems to be a good character for this challenge. On the novel he is kind of a nerdy chubby guy, and will be fun to make him as a real badass.

That, and hes got a cape.

very cool choice and awesome movie

This is my first project using zbrush 4. Still getting used to it but I already love GoZ, will use it a lot on this one. Found a way to keep the polygroups when swaping to maya, unwrapping on UV master with polygroups on and autogrouping with UV. Is this the easiest way?

#5

Awesome idea man! I would love to see this idea finished. The only thing i see is that his abdomen to his hips seems a bit too long. Im sure you will fix that though. Keep up the good work!

#6

Yes, i’ll be fixing the issues along the way. I just want somethin to build the base meshes on. I cant turn a sphere into anything, unlike some veteran wise-men here… I’m still trapped on lowpoly/subdivision world, and need a good base mesh first

Ive got most of the head, but still not satisfied with it. Spawn has mean eyes and a small egg shaped head, very different from the night owl original design… I know i’ll be referencing the movie more than the novel, but i want to design some stuff myself, like the ears.

Looks good man. I like your helmet so far. And yes, Goz is a gift from the Gods, who reside at Pixologic headquarters.

I suggest, though, that you take criticism when it is given and just ignore it if you don’t like. These challenges are as much about helping eachother out along the way as they are about final products and WIP images. Especially in the early stages, people will often spot things that you may or may not have noticed. And they’re just giving friendly advice before those areas become problematic. People here just want your models and sculpts to be the best they can. We enjoy others’ successes as much as our own.

Did I sound rude?? Sory about that dAnconia … It was not my intention.

Thanks for the tips. Keep them coming pls

#9

LOL! No not at all. Keep up the good work brotha!

#10

The torso is almost done… It was tricky to separate texture and details with zb layers, but it pays off. Its nice to adjust each intensity and be able to go back and change the muscles shapes and keep the details safe.

next step: gloves

Edit: The zipper at the bottom has been fixed

#11

nice going - watch your proportions  The head is very tiny in comparison to the torso atm

#12

2nd what mag said, the head is really small but keep up the good work.

#13

Thats true, the head is small. Thank you guys

#14

I have a problem on the wrist, but I dont want to change the base geometry and lose the layers yet. :stuck_out_tongue:

#15

The hips should be as wide or close to the same width as the shoulders.

#16

Thanks man, I will change that. But not too much since the references I’m using also have the shoulders wider.

It doesnt look too much like Todd McFarlane but I’m hoping to change that after posing.
