HMC 27: 30 Models in 30 Days - Jaspar

#1

Am gonna have a go at this challenge, is about time I got back into doing 3D stuff.
Realised it’s been about 4 years since I really spent any time doing 3D. Liked the idea of the 30 days 30 models challenge last time it ran, but sadly noticed it too late. I really struggle with tight time-frames, and this’ll be a great way to help me improve my pace (and be selective about detail).
Am gonna be using Modo 3, and Mudbox 2009 this time around. Should be an interesting learning experience, as I’ve never used Modo for rendering or texturing, and I haven’t really got around to using Mudbox properly since I bought it. Might resort to digging out Lightwave if my patience wears thin with Modo rendering.
Have been doing the Daily Challenges Roberto posted. Have both an iPhone and a Lighthouse pretty much done. May have to wait till the weekend to post my models, as I’ve got to do some quick manual reading regarding Modo rendering, and FireFTP doesn’t appear to be working for me for uploading…

Okay, finally ready to post some models. Has taken me a while to get the hang of the Modo renderer, and my modelling is as slow as ever, but I’ve finally got a few models together. Am going to try and make my way through each of the catagories, to give myself a variety of challenges…

I sadly don’t own one of these, so I’ve been mostly going off images of the front and back, because there ain’t too many photos of the sides out there, I hope the sides aren’t too inaccurate…

This is Start Point lighthouse, in south Devon, England. It’s probably the only lighthouse I’ve ever visited, and I’m quite fond of it, so it made sense to model it!

Here’s one of my reference photos, so you know what I was aiming for…

And the orthographics…

I chose this model, with the idea that it’d be quick, so I could catch up. I was mistaken. The screw-top proved rather more fiddly than I expected. If you want to see reference images, just google ‘Parker Quink’…

And the orthographics…

Jaspar, I think you did a good job modeling the lighthouse to match the reference. The detail at the top of the lighthouse with the lattice looks good.

I know what you mean about models looking easy but being hard. I worked on a Lincoln Log house last night thinking it would be easy, but building one of those in 3D is a lot harder than with the real ones. And finding reference views of anything showing all sides at a decent size is hard, too!

Cheers for the feedback Cindy!

Yeah, I think it’s a general problem with 3D modelling, everything looks easier than it is! I’ve been trying to do a wasp for the last couple of nights, but have some blind spots in my model (nobody takes photos of the underside of a wasp!). Shame it’s past wasp season, otherwise one of them would’ve made a sacrifice for the sake of art!

And the orthos…

Well, I’ve been losing a bit of momentum with this, guess it was inevitable, need to spend some time away from a computer. Either way, still working on stuff. This was a nice and simple one, just to at least get something out there. Have a Wii, and an Elephant on the way, but still have more work to do on those…

#10

woww nice detail on the dagger. confusing wires :argh:

#11

Cheers James (I think!?). Sorry about my confusing wires!

#12

Think this was the most tedious model I’ve ever made. Was so tedious, I couldn’t be bothered to post it for a number of days. Ugly wires too!..

And those wires…

#13

Great work man, keep 'em comming.

#14

Cheers for the encouragement, Vicky!

Has been a bit slow going with my modelling, and I haven’t had as much time to spare as I had hoped. Was working on an elephant, but side-tracked by having a go at UV mapping and texturing it. Have also been working on doing the chainsaw from Evil Dead, but have been faffing quite a lot. The night before last, I panicked and realised I needed to do a quick couple of models to get me up to a qualifying number. Problem is, I’m compelled to make things difficult for myself, and decided I was going to do the full kitchen collection. Why, oh why!
Anyhow. Have done quite a few of the kitchen models in the last couple of nights, which I’ll post tonight when I get home from work. I’ll also try and finish off the elephant and chainsaw, and post them tonight. That is, assuming my missus doesn’t go in to labour today!..

Had to happen, the contractions have started. Have a bit of time before we need to go to the hospital, so doing some last minute posting. Sadly, it means I won’t finish everything in time, and I’m not going to be able to submit the orthos in time, but will just post what I’ve got…
