HMC #26: Frank Frazetta Tribute - Birdman

#1

I had to do it. This master was such an inspiration for me as for millions of readers… However, it was hard to choose, too much masterpieces. Death dealer, egyptian queen, serpent. All choosen.

I hesitated between “Atlantide” and “Birdman”, both still not choosen.

As I won’t have very much time (like everyone in these contests), I will try to make “birdman”, wich is, for me, more suited because background is less important than in “atlantide”.

Good luck everybody!

Here is the beginning of my workflow: Zsphere + zsketch to pose first volumes

EDIT - bigger view

I find zsketch usefull to set pose of model. For now, I don’t know how to set ref image as background (imageplane plugin does not seems to work with zskecth…).

Please, tell me if you see major pose problem.

(Note: I saw my first picture was too small, I updated a bigger one).

Well, I have a question. As this piece is quiete rough, I was wondering if this “birdman” is, like Icarus, equipped with some attached wings or if it is an hybrid between man and bird.

Here are details about my question:

We can see some stroke looking like “links” on arms and right wrist. However, not suh stroke for a belt or on left wrist…

For now, I think abourt hybrid man/bird. What do you think?

nice - this has been one of my favs of his for a long time. Great choice

#5

Great choice!
Personally, I’d say the wings are attached like they would have been on Ikarus (to my eyes those are definitely straps of some kind on the right arm), but since the image is so rough, what’s stopping you from making him a real birdman if that’s your preference?! Your project, your decision!

Cheers!

Thank you both. Choice is important but it does not make it all :)! I want to improve my anatomic skills on this one but I am soooo slow…

TheRazorsEdge: You are right, I could make wathever I want. However, the more I look at it, the more I think you are right: why putting arms this way if these are not attached to wings ?

Thank for your comments. I really appreciate.
Cheers !

So I created an adaptive skin, set up first volume then retopologized it before doing UV layout.
Here is where I am so far:

Here is my sculpt so far:

I am not sure for the feet, still because of the roughness of the original… However, I think I will keep these (and refine of course).

I will not detail the back because of the incoming wings. Next update will show the global idea…

#9

Here come the first version of wings:

#10

Here is an update: more details and add of the tail and the leather part holding everything:

The next update will include missing elements like hairs, arm links and detaisl on the face…
Hope you like this one!
Cheers !

Wow!
Thanks for the update!

#13

You’re welcome.
Too bad I could not find time during the contest, but this is also a (big) part of the challenge :).

Thanks for the organization, I learned a lot and enjoyed sculpting one of FF art.

I hope I will find time for futures challenges.

Keep up good forum leading :thumbsup:
