HMC #23: Ansel Adams Tribute - Maikl

#1

Hi,
this is my first try participating in this challenge.

I want to do this picture:

http://www.temple.edu/photo/photographers/adams/Ansel2.jpg

as a diorama without the background (should already be enough work for the given time :argh: )

Does anybody know what kind of car this is?

The camera should be a Linhof Technika if I’m not completely wrong.
Can somebody confirm that?

Ok then, good luck everbody and have fun!

about the camera check here:

also for the car i spent the last 20 mins searching google woody wagons and i figure it has to be this:
1946 (or 1947 seems to not have sunscreen like adams) Pontiac Streamliner Station Wagon
near the bottom few pics different angles:

also heres a link to 4 photos of him on the car from the pbs doc:

btw i was thinking about doing this too but you beat me too it.
also take note that your diorama is not of a Adams picture, which makes me wonder if another portrait of him would be okay to do.

Thanks for the quick reply, very helpful!

I know it isn’t a Ansel picture, but as Roberto posted it himself in the reference thread I figured it would be ok.

Also the theme is Ansel Adams tribute and I think to show him working is part of this…

#5

cool, i wasn’t trying to give you a hard time.
hope the reference stuff is helpful.

Thats some great ref and material collecting you’ve been doing there spaceboy412, I am sure Maikl will find good use for that in his project. I hope you will have a good time working on it, look forward to see what you come up with. I was thinking of putting Ansel Adams in my scene as well, for the tribute value, but no idea if I will have time for it heh. Best wishes
Anders

Thanks for the encouragement!

Yes those refs will be very helpfull - wouldn’t have found that car on my own

aovesen, just try working on it, I also don’t know if my time is enough to finish this.

I’m doing the same picture you are! I found a blog post with a bunch of images of the same Pontiac that Ansel had. Haven’t figured out what year it is though although the picture was taken around 1942.

Thanks japetus for the link.
I haven’t posted my current work, as I’m still struggling with the basic shape of the car - do you found something that can be used as top- or frontview?

If I’m loosing too much time with this I found another picture I like to try instead:

Found some great stuff on flickr:

Edit: If you find the width of the car let me know…i can only find the length unfortunately :frowning:

Thanks japetus and spaceboy412 for the help!

But on this page: http://www.earlytimeschapter.org/1942.html the gallery doesn’t work on my computer (tried with IE and Firefox  )
If its not too much work can you please upload at least the top view somewhere else?

#13

try this, also turning off your adblock might help with that gallery.

#14

Haha I must have gone to that site 5 times looking for info and i totally missed that gallery… doh!

#15

Maikl, where did you see that it was a Linhof Technika? I’m not sure that it is…but i would love for it to be since I found a lot of good reference. I’m trying to figure out what he used at that time for sure. I know he used a lot of cameras throughout his life. I guess I just have to decide how important it is that I use the correct camera

#16

@japetus: I think on wikipedia there are two large format cameras mentioned he used those years and the Linhof Technika looked pretty close, so if I’m wrong feel free to correct me

Haven’t done much to show yet, because my vacation starts in a week and I want to do it mostly in this time.
