Alright,
just wanted to start creating my thread. Will start brainstorming this week!
at the moment still busy doing a model for the rigging challenge. I’ll try and finish that before starting here.

Just posted this in the FAQ section, but i just came up with an idea for a piece of work.
Will be quite a hard one i bet.
So i will appear inside a painting, trying to reach out of it to grab something.
This will require a 3d rendered scene of myself, which will be adjusted to be used as a texture, for a model in another 3d scene. This scene will be a small room with a painting frame, a socket and some object.
Or!
The setup is one entire scene, where the canvas of the painting is a cut out, and behind the wall there is the other scene. With compositing it could look like a painting.
Hmm, what a challenge.
Really neat idea nothingness.
Let me throw this thought at you, though. It seems to me that your idea deviates from the idea of the challenge. A way to bind your concept to the challenge would be to have the painting be an Escher-esque style painting. That would “mesh” perfectly (pardon the terrible pun). M.C. Escher’s insight into perspective was quite fascinating. Here’s an example:

this was actually my idea in the first place. Maybe it wasn’t really clear.
But the main difference is, that the 2d in the 3d, will be a 3d to begin with.
even if i’m not entirely sure how i’m gonna do this one, i think i wil make it a fully 3d scene.
As if to say that after the frame, there is a cutout in the wall and there is another scene behind it.
Afterwards i’ll see what i can do. Possibly with some compositing the right effect could be created. Allthough for this challenge, the modeling is way more important.

Keep in mind that textures are OPTIONAL on the challenge. So whatever model you build has to stand up on tis own merits WITHOUT textures or a nice render.

I’ve been working on the room and starting point.
Still need to work on the ornaments on the frame. It’s a low res export from zbrush at the moment, but i would love to do a retopo of it and get it back.
Still thinking about what to show inside the frame. A few options are comming along.

Ok, still haven’t changed the room and the picture frame yet.
But didn’t want to show this yet, but just to show it’s still in progress, i’m posting a screen of the sculpting.
First is the lame low-poly model (will be changed soon if i decide to model the toes too)
It could be that to keep the detail of the body, i’ll put him in some sort of latex super-hero outfit. Then there won’t be real details like for the toes and ears, so a retopo wouldn’t be needed anyway.
Not all parts are still done! Like the part of the stomach and especially the face. I’m also still working on the upper legs.

Great solid looking torso. I like the face so far too. I think the shape of the hamstring needs adjusting though. Keep it up.

Thanks RexDiem. Not sure, but i didn’t show the backside of the upper leg. So not sure if you got the musclesname right. I still haven’t done a lot of work to the legs of the stomach area.
At the moment i’ve been doing a little retopo to get the bash mesh cleaner and better for certain parts (including toes for ones and more detail in the ears).
But changing the mesh gets the retopo in zbrush so messed up it’s a horror to get it back in a clean state. If someone knowed how this is avoided, please tell me.
So, while i’m working on the hardest parts of this model (the hand and the foot), i figured out what to in this challenge.
Basically, i don’t use any reference (accept my face and some anatomy references) to build up a pose for a painting inside a room.
The room itself will hold just the frame (and what’s in it) and a classic column displaying a pistol and some ammunition.
Inside the painting, will be 2 figures! The first will be classical heroic version of myself chained to a tree by the neck, arm and leg, while trying to reach for the gun in order to end it’s life.
Behind this character will be me again, but this time in the shape of the devil or some demonic creature with horns and those kind of classical creature legs of which i forgot the name. This demon will be facing the other side while thinking.
So in the end it will be one big sculpture, and if i have the time, i will finish it off with textures and compositing to make it look like an actual painting.

And here is an update on the second character.
It was build out of the body from the first character - after a little more work than you already saw - and altered to have other legs and some horns (i need to do a lot of work on the head.
After some sculpting, this is the result.
Still need to work on the back, and a lot of work on the arms. Then we’ll see where we are.
nice - I’d say make the hooves a bit wider at the bottom so it’s not all one width with the calf

One small thing that is getting me is the transition from the upper (human) leg and the top part of the (fawn) leg. I feel like either the human part needs to be slimmed or tapered as it goes down or the opposite needs to happen with the fawn part. Muscles and all look quite nice, there is just something weird to me about the abrubt width change from top to bottom at the first knee. Maybe just adding a bit of a calf muscle onto the fawn part of the leg, or just buff up the muscles there a bit. Anyway, that’s just me, still looks really good. I look forward to seeing where else you are taking this.

I’ll get into the legs ASAP and get it even better. Let’s hope i can finish this character very soon so i can finish the other one.
I think rigging them and posing them will be such a challenge. :surprised
So, i finally finished it, but it was a serious rush job.
Practically did most work the very last day. Working on it untill around 5u30 AM.
I don’t really like the shading in the render, but didn’t have the time to search any more.
So I might just work on it later to get it finished like i want it to be.
This is a pretty damned cool concept. I know you have no more time for this challenge but I would definitely say you should really continue with this. I think you could really push the drama a bit more. The guy who is chained could really have a more tortured or terrified expression, just something that shows the struggle a bit. I feel like it is a great concept that shouldn’t be dropped. Really push the struggle and work on the expressions a bit more. Still, well done on getting this finished right there at the end.
