HMC #22: Classic Self Portrait: Magdalena Dadela

JMART - thanks… no I’m not interested in doing full 3d copies of 3d images… it’s a challenge to try and model it so it’s working from all sides but doing another picture just doesn’t appeal to me

Brett - thanks so much, I’m really happy you like it!

Nothingness - took way too long to render half the scene LOL and I didn’t want to waste time setting up a nice shader either - I didn’t like the marble effect I had and I didn’t have the patience to keep trying to get something better… I think I’ll have to finally start building my own library of shaders so I don’t have to redo some things like that :surprised

What time are we talking about here?

I know you used Decimator for the export. I did the same thing and got some high polycounts.
But using a good renderer, it’s not all that bad.
By the way, i think it would just have been sweet to see the scene in a global nice shader with some good shadows and lights. So maybe just leave the textures alone.

But i can understand this is the time where you say, enough of this, what’s next!

IDK Rage, I think you’re way off on this one. She did post a pic of herself earlier, though I see it’s not there now, and it is a very good likeness. She adapted her image to an existing classical painting, one that happens to be faced in this way. Seems pretty close to the spirit of the challenge to me.

As for the quality, again are we looking at the same piece? What I find most impressive is how the tiny tiny details in the clothing still show up so well in the sculpt. I see a few spots where the sculpt goes against the grain of the topology but it’s very small and not immediately noticeable.

Well anyway Mag, you addressed the one thing I thought needed work, the texture of the cloth. While the dress is bulky, as it should be, the cloth itself looks much thinner now like a cotton fabric vs. how thick it looked before.

Well done.

Congrats on finishing! really like how it turned out!

Just watching that dress gives me a head ache hehe :stuck_out_tongue:

It´s just amazing how much work that has been put into this piece.

And like you said, these challenges isn´t a place to make your next masterpiece but rather a nice way to pimp up your skills.

Good luck!

Nothingness - it’s not so much the final render time but the test renders that drove me mad  I couldn’t be bothered… yeah I’ve had enough of that project heheh. I might render it later but I’m definitely not texturing it

Wyatt - thanks a lot, I’m glad it looks better

energise - thanks and exactly - it’s just practice

Wonderful work, you made this piece very original and in your own style, yet managed to keep the overall character of the concept. I personally would like to see a little more detail in the fireplace, but at the same time I find it helps push the eye towards the character and the dress, that dress is , ya know I’m not really sure the right word for it so I will just go with WOW. Anyway congratulations on a job very well done, and thanks for sharing your workflow.

actually I have one question , in the beauty and the ortho shots the little things in front of the fireplace (the thing your foot is resting on) they look like they are a lower division then the wireframe, am I correct in my viewing , or are my eyes playing tricks on me (smoothing group in xsi? maybe)

Congrats!

#174

congrats, it looks very very nice. You deserved it.

#175

Congratulations!
I would love to see Tissot’s painting projected onto your model, even if only roughly, but I imagine that anything less than perfection would be something that you would avoid.
Anyway, this is an amazing achievement as it is. A well deserved first place. :buttrock:

#176

Congradulations, it’s a wonderful model, all prices well deserved!

#178

Awesome work! Well deserved :D. Congratulations.

#179

Awesome work. Are the reliefs on the Fireplace sculpted or did you use some zdepth info or alpha?

#180

Thank you very much Ti  You finished with a great entry yourself - congrats on that!

PixelRod - thanks - the fireplace was free hand sculpted too - I just looked at some architectural relief sculpting [it was a doorway in fact :)] and just sculpted in symmetry - so it’s the same on both sides and then just placed in in the right spot
