HMC #22: Classic Self Portrait: Ari-Thinker

#1

This is the first sculpture I though about, the humble thinker. here’s me posing with him.

#2

lol nice pic - looking forward to it

#3

Thanks Intervain. Yours is looking excellent so far, I don’t know how you model so fast and you have a job.

I’ve done a rough for the body(still needs work) as well, but I’m not gonna post that reference .

#4

Ok, here’s the body progress. I’ll sculpt it more in pose, but this is the starting point.

#5

Ok, I’ve spent Way too long trying to pose this. I initially tried with a zSphere rig but I couldn’t stop the face from deforming I ended up doing it with a rig in Max. This is where I’m up to, I’m gonna start sculpting from here.

#6

I’ve done a bit of sculpting on the torso thighs and arms.

#7

I was thinking of doing that pose aswell, good choice!
And good work so far.

#8

Posing in Zbrush can be such a heap of misery you can miss. But did you use zspheres to deform the model? I think the technique generally used (i think it’s called transpose) is sometimes good when you get used to it.
One important thing to remember is to pose a low-res subdivision to avoid strange things.
It would possibly be a helping hand in other projects to learn and use it.

#9

Thanks nothingness for the suggestions. I tried using Zpheres which might have worked if the pose was less extreme. I ended up doing a rig in max on the lowest sub, which is still quite dense compared to what I have done before(mostly game rigs). I continue to use transpose once I got it back into zbrush to tweak the pose.

Heres an update after a couple more hours sculpting. I’m finding that I’m fighting with the Typology around the stomach and shoulder so I thinking of doing a retop. I don’t know how wise that is at this stage though.

#10

It’s looking pretty good so far, I like the folds of skin on the stomach, really sells the pose. Keep going!

#11

Mostly done work on the hands and upper lip since the last update.

#12

One thing that jumps out at me atm is the chest area - look at a human skeleton - a chest is really big and on your model it feels almost collapsed - the ribs are not there  You do have a line where the muscles in the area should be but the bones under those muscles are missing… or rather they are broken, since in the middle of the chest they do exist. Compare the last image with this one  to see what I mean… Keep going

#13

Thanks for the Crit Intervain. I have done a fair bit of work over the entire sculpture, including the area you have mentioned, I hope it looks more natural now. And Thanks for the encouragement.
I am built fairly different to the thinker sculpture and I am trying to be as accurate as I can without embelishing, so I wont be as flexed and ripped.
Any Crits and Suggestions are welcome.
I still don’t know how to do very good looking renders in zBrush. How do I get an antialiased edge for instance?

#14

Yeah, Zbrush is great, but it’s kind of annoying how some of the small things that have sort of backwards workarounds never get fixed. Anyway, the trick for anti-aliasing is pretty simple at least. Just open your tool, then go to document>new document. This will create a new empty document. Then click document>double, which will double the native size of said document. Then simply click the AAHalf button on the right shelf. After this just click and drag (cause your tool should still be loaded) to bring your tool into this new document. Then just hit T to enter edit mode and voila, now you can rotate around, etc. Isn’t this easier than them just having a button that raises the sampling rate and does exactly the same thing?

#15

Thanks for the help Tim:). I really never pay attention to those buttons on the side, I just assumed I could do it from the render pull down, but every time I put anti aliasing on in the there it give the sculpture a white edge(I don’t know why you’d ever want that).

Added the base and posed the feet better to match it, I still want to tweak the left foot some more and a couple of other things. I don’t know how much more time I’m gonna be able to work on it before the deadline, so this is my tentative Entry ATM.
Any Crits or comment would be greatly appriciated.

#16

If you still got time to work on it, i would definitely suggest working on the ears some more. It makes the head look really flat overal.

#17

K, here is the final render, I’ve worked more bit more on it. Mostly the ears(Thanks Nothingness for the crit) and the left foot. + added a sexy bronze Matcap from the pixellogic site(care of intervain).

Based off Rodin’s Thinker. Used reference from photo’s of myself.

The sculpture was Done in zBrush with a base mesh created in 3d studio max. Overall I spent 50 hours+ on it. I stopped counting.

#18

nice finish

#19

Very great final!
