HMC #21 - Nancy, Queen of the Rocketmen

So this is a first for me. I’m entering the challenge and I have no idea what I’m doing yet. :smiley: Usually an idea just springs in my head without much thought but this time the topic has thrown me a bit.

So far every idea I have feels like Indiana Jones mixed with steam punk. I don’t think steam punk is the right way to go so I’m still working on a concept. Not to worry, I’m getting “Sky Captain” from the library and I’ll probably draw heavily from the film. In other words unless I get some grand revelation I’m probably going to be modeling Angelina Jolie this challenge. :smiley:

Glad you entered.
Id also get The Rocketeer, as its the defacto big budget treatment of that “king of the rocketmen” style. KOTRM was a 1950’s tv serial, with a rocketpack hero. The aviator is also good to get for fashion and design for that era.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I’ve always enjoyed this image by Aly Fell, it fits perfectly with the style. For inspiration more than anything.

Whoops, I just posted that one for inspiration. Though looking at it, may not be a bad design to go with. I would want to get permission from Poshspice first before I attempted it though.

I just rented Sky Captain myself! I remembered that she had had a floating aircraft fortress thingy that would be great for my reference…

The family is out of town for a few days and I’ve got the house to myself. We’ll see if I can capitalize.

Here’s my reference layout in ZBrush. I mostly wanted to post it to point out the image I’m using for the front view. That is actually a shot of the Gala model from IR-Models. It was such an accurate likeness that I couldn’t find a photo that was better.

Ugh, I almost don’t want to post this. :smiley: So I had big plans and a full head of steam. I loaded up ZBrush pulled out my tablet… and realized that I had forgotten my stylus at work! BLARG! So this is what I could do with a mouse, which isn’t much. :banghead: Basic ZSphere mockup and some point pulling. Oh well, I’ll work some of the hard surface models instead.

Switched to the respirator on the front of her suit. I didn’t really like the brown and glowy colorization of everything in Sky Captain so I changed it to this temporary blue steel color. The breathing pipes need to come forward more, I’ll fix that tomorrow.

Your model looks nothing like her…it`s too blocky and lacks definition… :argh: :wip:

Love your refs. Love the character, and am anxious to see her develop (so to speak).

Ahh the family is away, are you relieved or lonely? When my gf (prety much wife) goes out of town, I feel both lol. It’s nice to have time to myself, but the bedroom gets so cold and empty at night and I can’t sleep.

The house was way too quite considering that usually every TV in the house is on and the kids are running from one side to the other. I countered the sleep thing by working till I fell asleep in my chair. The beginning of a project is always the hardest part for me, you know, getting started.

Haha man same here…my fiance is gone the rest of this month too, how fortuitous. I just about fell asleep in my chair too then woke up late for work. Oh well:shrug:

I spent way to long tweaking this but I think I got one of her more iconic features right.
