HMC #21 Massive airship by David Wranding

Looks great Japetus! Nice detail so far.

I find the scale to be a little small, though. I looked at the original concept art, and the difference between the size of the planes and the size of the airship looks considerably different. Could you scale down your biplane (about 20% of the original) and render another image for us? I’d like to compare the two. Based on the scale you have right now, it doesn’t look to be a whole lot bigger than a normal zeppelin. Maybe twice as big. If I’m not mistaken, it’s supposed to be much much larger than that.

No crits apart from that, though. This thing will be a BEAST and you’re rocking along.

Thanks Rage! My biplanes are modeled in the corrrect scale, and basically i scaled up reference until one of the drawings of the biplanes was the same size as my model. I’ll check it again though, I was actually hoping to squeeze a littel bit more room out anyway.

Daw: That’s a great idea!

I’ve been watching and it’s evolving really good. Keep up the good work. Also I love the attention to the small detail and the scale of your idea.

Haven’t been doing much the past week. We’ve had a heat wave in Seattle. Yesterday we broke the record high with 104 degrees! Needless to say I haven’t wanted to sit in my hot condo with the hot box computer running… if it becomes bearable again I’m hoping to work on it more.

#25

Hope I’m not stating the obvious but why not turn on the AC? It’s been around the 100s for the last 2 months, I must have my AC.

#26

Oh Wyatt… thankfully my work has AC. However for most homes in Western Washington, AC is a luxury. No one has it inside their houses. The hottest it usually gets around here is in the 80s. This is very unusual weather.

#27

Ah, I have much to learn.

#28

wwoohooo…reminds me of my childhood days in Kuwait…very hot! hopefully you can work on your airship. I would love to see this massive baby:buttrock:

#29

RageOfAges, thanks for the suggestion about scaling it up! I scaled it up by 30% I took it up to just over 1000 feet long and the biplanes feel a lot more comfortable on the runways. Hope to post some images later…

Modern Mechanix is proving to be a pretty neat resource of the then-future of blimps, crazy crazy stuff but gives me great ideas:

Bicycle dirigible

300 MPH zeppelin

not sure if this is going up or down
gasless dirigible

atomic dirigible

Just a quick update… been working on the back end a bunch. Made some engines and a lower fin. Also sized up the whole bloody thing. I’m reworking the rear structures, I am trying to decided weather to make them smooth and art deco/retro futurist or more realistic and built like decks on a naval battleship. Any sugguestions? Thanks everyone again for taking the time to look…

#33

i love seeing those cannons. Your ship is mean. No enemy can approach it :applause:

#34

WOW! this just get better and better!

I like the art deco look it has right now, with all the little surface details.

#35

I meant to post this earlier in the challenge after watching Sky Captain behind the scenes but Hugh Ferris is the guy that is largely held responsible for creating that style especially for New York City. Google search his name.

Everything is coming together very well.

#36

Cool stuff…thanks Wyatt! Reminds me of Metropolis also.

#37

Well I did do some work on this the other day, but I can’t seem to find my USB drive anywhere :frowning: I’ll have to post from work. I was working on the super structure area again, and I think I finally got something that I like, which also works well with the concept art. Will try to post tomorrow…

Ok! Finally an update! Got to work on this sucker again today.

I worked on the super scructure again today and I think I’m finally getting it to a place that I like. The area with the large arched beams (image 2 and 3) has turned into another hangar. I realized I should take more advantage of the “rocketmen” theme so I decided there should be some rocket launching pads outside the hangar. It’s sort of a infantry egress area. I will also probably put a few on the long rear runway area. But I’m thinking maybe vehicles could come out of the lower rear hangar area, i dunno.

In addition, I started getting the top superstructure working well now too. I envision the left most building to kind of be some sort of navigation tower thing, there are some armored lookout areas on the top of it. The second structure is the engine exhaust tower. It has a cluster of stacks all encased in a heavy armor shielding and the last tower I think will be a gunnery tower. The circular bits near the bottom of the first image will be gun turret areas. I think I’ll widen the base a bit so people could walk around on it, not sure yet. Basically the superstructure is being modeled simlar to a battleship of the time period. Thanks for the comments and crits! Enjoy!
