“Drunk” is my fave so far. That expression captures the precise moment between “happy drunk” and “outside, now!”.
Qually-T mate :o)

heheheh… good one. yeah! brett told me he usually only hear “outside now!” hehehehe… just kiding.
brett. think you do some really cool work, with this. i think with “sad” you really captured him. “flirty” and “drunk” are great too but maybe a bit more you. heheh
think i gave you all my crits already. i got one small though. i think his neck folds on “sad” is a bit too extreme. it looks a little like he’s got too much loose skin.
looking forward for your next one.

Hey guys, Thanks again for comments and crits. Always appreciated :).
RageOfAges: Thanks rage. Your right. I have toned the wrinkles down. But the update isn’t in this post I’m afraid
Airflow: Thanks. For the eyes I see what your saying. But generally this is how I’ve understood the majority of the guys model the eyes. The convex look comes from the refraction in the shader. Right now theres no refraction. That will happen in the render :).
Intervain: Like a deer in the headlights. hahaha.
Piek: hahaha, Thanks for dropping in piek. Hope your well and keep safe in the pubs there mate :D.
rasmusW: Haha. Doh! ah! I think your right! I was using my face as some ref for those. For drunk I had to get completely hammered to pull the complete spaced look off. I call it method sculpting! haha.
Ok heres two new ones… serious and happy. No prizes for guessing which one is which. :P.

Hope you like them.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers,
Brett
Whooo, great work overall pal, for the serious one, total win! I don’t think Shia could perform that one that well
No, I think you missed what I was saying. The look you modeled is a side effect of refraction from the cornea of a normal eye which has a convex iris. The iris does not go in regardless of how many people model it like that. Indented is incorrect, look at the referance I posted.
Its the same as people saying Alternate reality instead of alternative reality, the first one is incorrect but cos alot of people say it, it keeps getting used, was in the recent startrek film, you would think Spock would know his Time paradox lore wouldent you.
Anyway, it up to you if you want to change it, but to be anatomically correct, the iris is a flap of muscle that sits over the opening of the eye, and it is convex.

Nice updates btw.
Hi Brett,
You’re doing sweet work man, but maybe you know that already
I like “serious” a lot, and “flirty”, given that’s a near impossible expression to define. The tear in “sadness” is, like Magdalena said, a really nice touch too.
Finish line in sight man gogogogogo!
Yeh after I jumped out it’s really been nice to follow this thread.
I must say you have a really nice illustrative style that still manages to capture the likeness of the portrait.
It also seems like you’ve spent a lot of time at this.
On the convex/concave debate I think concave looks pretty neo-classical.
Maybe sculptors in the day did concave irises probably in order to capture the
light in a realistic manner.
The same reasons digital people seem to be doing the same?
However and in accord with Airflow I agree that this concave area can
at least be covered with a lens?
However I really don’t see the urgency. It’s really a style that I’m sure a lot people can like.
good stuff Brett. I totally don’t have the problem with the eyeballs myself… my problem is with the eyebrows ;)… i think you could add more visible wrinkles above the nose bridge, especially in the serious expression
wow…ive been lookin at this thread and itching to ask, please forgive a noob but how did you do the facial expressions? are they rigged?
thanks again guys. and girls :).
TyroneMaddams: Hehe. Thanks bud.
menthol: Ha! thanks your far too kind.
Airflow: Oh well guess I’m wrong. I’ll see what I can do if I have time :).
polymaster: Thank you so much.
Lord McGoat: Love your bale! This challenge is turning my brain into sludge!
Spin99: Thanks mate. What usually happens is at render time a seperate lens geo is used that is transparent and simulates refraction pulling the concave shape to convex. The concave shape is to catch light and shadows. But this is an emotions challenge. Not an eye challenge :).
Intervain: Thanks Mag. Your crits are always appreciated. Just not sure I have time to get to them right now. Hope you understand :).
razeverius: Hey man. No problem with the questions. His not rigged. I’m using zbrush and trying to match up some emotions by eye. Sorry its not a great answer.
Heres some more expressions…
Despair…

Lust (LOL)

Enjoyment…

Hope you like them. Right now I can feel my brain oozing out my ears. lol!
Cheers
Brett
Wow Lust is golden…i laughed out loud when i saw Lust he looks adorable haha
Enjoyment just needs an eyebrow raise and wrinkles/creases in the centre as tho he is thinking “oooh man…nicee butt Megan Fox has…”
Looking forward to the next set of expressions
oh its ok, it’s the same thing my bro told me about what you guys might be doing, anyway, loving the enjoyment expression
Yeah, this looks really good… I think you could carry the expressions a bit father… add a bit more umpf to them. I know Shia doesn’t have a very broad range of emotions, but I think this would really make the character ‘PoP’
Great work!
Lol lust is awesome Brett. I can just picture him in a van parked on the street, watching the girls go by
-Rage
superb stuff brett!!
the expressions are really great!! man i was away from past couple of weeks… i didnt even knew abt this challenge… else i would have joined too… seems really fun
