HMC #20 - Expressions - Nico Strobbe

Alright,

modeling is a face is not really my field of expertise - yet - compared to hard-surface modeling like the walker. But let’s go for it and start learning.

My plan - if i do so wish to accept it - is not a model difficult, but a model impossible!

I will attempt a detailed and realistically-cartoonish interpretation of … well, … ME!

I think i’ll be able to start around next wednesday.

Good luck to all

So, i got started on the base model and it’s going pretty smooth so far.
I know i need to add the vertical edges above the eye, but it should be obvious i’m still in the process of working on it. Just like there is still much work on the mouth.
It still doesn’t look like me by far, but this is just a base model that i’ll be able to use later in other projects of mine - i hope.
So maybe by tomorrow i’ll have some good references of me and when the model is done i can start getting the resemblances.
I’ll probably model this head like a bust so i can also make it a finished work. I really hope i don’t get into any trouble with the rigging.

#3

Hey looks good so far! Topology looks good… Do you have any photo ref of what you look like?

Edit-

I looked on your portfolio page and saw that you had a self portrait!

#4

Thanks,
i still need to have some reference taken, cause it won’t be any good if i try to take them myself  So a friend of mine will do it for me. Meanwhile i’ll try and get the base mesh as good as possible and then make it look more like me.

And i already did notice i really need to seriously recheck the eyes.

#5

Ok, there is something still wrong with the proportions in this head. Also didn’t really took the time to model the back of the head.
And i just was thinking, if i should model the hair into the mesh, or just do it without any.
Normally i’m gonna get my references today and then i’ll be able to try and make it look like me. My god that will he a horrible experience.

Anyway, this is what i got so far.

#6

looking good so far - nice mesh. Are you going to add a mouth bag, and open the mouth?

#7

Hey Nico, very very well work in the mesh!, excellent the part above of the eye, also ears, the nose and overall are pretty well worked. Waiting for next.

#8

thanks Intervain!
I already made the mouth so it can open. Still need to figure out how exactly i need the shape that baddy interior. First i’ll do the teeth and the rest will come.

But first i’m seriously busy making this base mesh BUTT-UGLY !!
this includes a lot of retopology and lot’s of tweeks.

Hey stridiggio, thank you too!
I still got to fix many problems so let’s hope it comes easy.

#9

Here is an update for the references.
I know the lighting is rather freaky, but it gave some options.
I’m not fornd of pictures of myself, but what the hell.

And no, i don’t have red hair! :hmm:

Now it’s time to start making the base model like me.
Will be quite a job.

#10

Haha cool man, looks like you had fun taking those  Gonna be entertaining to follow this.

I dunno if you have one already, but if you can get a reference photo looking directly up at you (ie up your nose), it’s an invaluble bit of reference to have. Really helps when figuring out the curvature of the mouth, and how the nose and eyes sit in the face.

Sweet topology too btw.

#11

Thanks Lord McGoat!

very funcky name btw

I think i should still make those kind of shots, but don’t think i’ll post them for security reasons :buttrock:
But does this mean you think the base mesh is wrong at where this all is connected? Cause i know i had some issues with the eyes. The nose and mouth are really something that is extreme different from person to person.

But thanks for the reply

#12

Nah man, I suggested it just from looking at your reference pics, not your base mesh. It’s such a useful angle to have, and often overlooked, so thought it was worth mentioning. The base mesh looks as though it’s more than up to the job of holding a likeness of you.

#13

Ah ok,

we’ll during the building of the base mesh, i was indeed looking into a mirror from below to check the position of the eyes. The eyes, and the ears were modeled from mine, so only these were really looking like me.

But as i’m changing this base, I’m adjusting a lot of the edges so that rigging and deforming this will give the shape it needs. Cause I’m not gonna start sculpting on this one.

cheers

Looking great so far! Haha I love your photo sheet! Modeling looks good so far i stared at it a hwile and looked it over…I think you’ve got some great topology!

#15

Thanks iatethecrayon!

The topology already got even better and a little more detailed. So you can expect a little update very soon. I’m not sure on how well it looks like me, cause it’s rather hard to make that happen.
So i’ll post the progress soon without any hair done yet. But i’m gonna do the hair so that i start looking more like i do, and then can focus more on facial comparison. You wouldn’t believe how much someone looks different without any hair.

I’m just not sure if the hair should be a seperate mesh, or integraded into the base mesh. I’ll start with a seperate and see what to do afterwards.

#16

I thought the same thing when I was doing my model! It’s crazy how someone you’ve seen so often, like an actor or yourself in your case, looks like a stranger sans hair :argh: ! Haha! it really does throw you off.

I was trying to figure out what to do with my hair too…separate seems like the best way to go. iIwas thinking maybe taking polys from the top of the head and working from there…

Yow good start so far on the basemesh.
Good luck with the expressions!

#18

Thanks iatethecrayon and delavega!

I just did a little test and showed this current screen to a very good friend of mine without saying anything about it. And he didn’t even saw who it was. So it’s rather obvious i think.

But first i’ll do the hair and then it might all just change a lot. So, here is the update.
