I’ll join in on this one, haven’t done a challenge in a while, too much fun to pass up
HMC #20 - Expressions - Nicholas McElmury.. A.K.A. myself
So I got started a bit today, here is my modeling reference photo’s. I’ll be snapping some pictures of some facial expressions once I figure out what the final list is
Can’t help but feeling like a bit of a goober taking pictures of myself in front of the mirror like a 12 year old on myspace lol. But yeah, anyways, here’s my mug, lets get it on!

Good luck man. Was considering a self port. But didn’t want to scare the forum and crash the servers:surprised
Haha, thanks BrettSinclair!
I know the feeling… it was a risky move putting my oversized head up for everyone to see, but I guess I had no choice
Anyways, I got a start on Sunday, and got my basemesh fleshed out for the most part over the past couple nights, I’m probably going to rework a couple of edgeloops that aren’t looking very well placed, but I think I’m about ready to move forward!
Here are some wires…

Hi,
clean mesh, nice topology so far.
Don’t know if you are going for a close likeness with your basemesh, but few things I noticed are:
-forehead/top of the head has to be rounder
-the cheekbone in sideview of your 3d model is sticking out too much I think compared to your pictures.
-Think his bottom eyelid is too big…
But then again, for a basemesh this is more than decent if you plan to sculpt likeness in zbrush.
Good job!
cheers
Hey Delevega, thanks for the comments! I changed the eyelids, they were way off as you had said (don’t know how that flew under my radar), rounded out the head and brought the cheeks in a tad, thanks for the crits, they were definitely a major help!
Been picking at this thing all week between work and other projects. I’ve got my base mesh down pat, and have some textures ready to go. Still have some touch up to do on the lips, getting a bit of stretching…
I got started on my ‘scared’ expression and here is a render of it so far. I will post up my expressions chart probably this weekend because I’ve been being lazy taking the rest of my pictures

lol
the last update’s funny… well I did a self portrait once and hated the experience so I admire anyone who’s doing it hehe

Looking funny already!
But maybe a little too much texture and too little model.
I also think the shape needs a little more tweaking. I believe the problem is that the images are shot with too much fisheye distortion. You need to try and take pictures with a large zoom as possible. Then you’ll see the differences very clear.
cheers
Finally an update! haha
Nothingness - Thanks for the suggestion, I’m actually having a bit of a tough time getting an extremely detailed model that would realistically represent my face. I don’t have many wrinkles or anything, so I’m afraid of overdetailing.
As for the camera lens, it was a tad difficult since I was basically Myspacing it with the arm out in front of me lol. Thanks for the comment!
Intervain - Thanks! We’ll see what happens haha.
JMART - Thanks!
Alrighty, I’ve been picking at this thing off and on, here’s what I have so far. (I realize I still have to post my reference up, I keep slacking on that)
We have sad, excited, and scared so far.

haha cool
I’d say make the scared and excited a bit more different - they’re very similar atm.
