HMC #20 - Expressions - Charlie Chaplin

#1

Hello everyone! This is my first challenge, so help me along if I’m doing anything incorrectly please! I’ve decided on Charlie Chaplin as the Tramp, because of his range of facial expressions (and because it gives me a reason to watch his movies over again). I found a bunch of images already that are saved elsewhere. They will be posted after I get home from work!

This is very exciting! I’m so nervous!!

Welcome to the HMC Julie. Charlie Champan is a GREAT choice for this challenge. I can`t wait to see this thread develop. Best of luck.

Really great choice here. He’s got one of the most expressive faces out there, I’d say.

Skol!

nice choice - best of luck Julie

Hi thanks everyone! I didn’t realize how long it took to have my thread post, so when I went to put my images up when I got home from work it wasn’t there yet! haha! Here are a few images I’ve found. I have an image of Mr. Chaplin in profile back on my home computer. Hopefully I’ll be able to start roughing out my model tonite!

Thanks everyone!

Looking forward to this thread. Charlie is a great choice.

ps.
Saw something funny on your portfolio! It says at “last updated” that it was last updated in 31 December 1969. I didn’t know this site was that old :bounce: :argh: :surprised

WOAH! That’s pretty rad! HAHAHA! There’s a rip in the time and space continuum! Black hole! Wahhhhhhhh! :scream:

It is really hard to find images of Mr. Chaplin that aren’t blown out or small but I managed to find about 30 or so that were pretty good, and some pretty big ones too! It’s weird how different he looks from his character when hes without makeup and all haha! Here’s some WIP shots. I really need to work the wireframe a lot more (the topology is a MESS) but just getting the facial shape and the basic proportions felt most important.

All comments are appreciated. I really need new eyes to look at this. Thanks!!

It seems like a good idea to have a collage of facial expression ideas…

Great start.
I’m not a fan of getting your topology just right from the beginning. I think it’s better to build up the shape, the detail en then try to get the topology fitted to the shape.
Also have a lot of attention to the silhouette of the face. Then you’ll see there are a lot of wrong shapes like the cheek and the eyebrow area.

keep it comming
cheers

Made some good progress today i think!

Next will be messing with the topology to get it perfect, then details details details…

Modeling the hair, mustache and all, would be a good idea right?

Also, how do I get the images I upload to be bigger in the thread and not have to be opened in a separate window?

Thanks!

Use the yellow button with the stylized mountains to insert a direkt link to where you have uploaded the image, ie photobucket, and it should appear in the post.

Nice start on the mesh!

Cheers!

Thank you! I didn’t realized it needed to be uploaded elsewhere. Thanks for the comment on the model also.

—edit

Most images were found with just a google search of “charlie chaplin” but a GREAT website of large high quality images of movies and movie stars is http://www.doctormacro1.info/ (Dr. Macro’s High Quality Movie Scans).

when i came to work and looked on my computer I found some MAJOR issues with how my computer is rendering at home :frowning: The renders are not coming out at all how the model looks (the renders look squished!!). Will repost renders when I figure out the issue.

hey, good choose, The Golden Chimera is my favorite of Him, is very funny and have good close ups for references.

About the Render, Perhaps is the Camera’s atributes configuration , but in the last Render doesn’t look like squished. good luck!
