Highpoly texturing

I wonder how to texture a highpoly model.
For games we create a highpoly to produce normal maps on a low poly. Diffuse and spec, cavity as well as unwrapp are done on a lowpoly model.
But what about highpoly? If i am not creating the asset for game and want to save “resolution” of the mesh. Do I need to unwrapp highpoly? But that is quite chalenging job. Or some optimization of the mesh is needed?

You unwrap the cage version of the mesh before it is subdivided. Hence the importance of modeling with a clean topology from the start.
